SEVERE EARTHQUAKE.

[By Telegraph.] [PBB3S ASSOCIATION TBIiBQBASt.] WELLINGTON, June 26. A most severe shook of earthquake was felt here at 522 this morning. The direotion was from E. to N. ( and the vibration continued for some timo, a smaller shock being experienced about 630 a.m. The shock created the greatest excitement in town, and all the brick buildings in tho city have been examined, but no perceptible damage to any has occurred. In Wellington one or two chimnios wero thrown down. The Government cilices also suffered, largo pieces of plaster having fallen, and in one office tho mantelpiece wa s carried away. Tho ceilings of the new police station were also cracked, and in the upper story several large pieces of plaster fell. Tt is known that in sevoral of the mercantile storos damage has occurred, but as all the principal places of business are closed to-day, it is not yet known to what extent injury has been done. WELLINGTON, June 27. Two slight shooks of earthquake were felt last night, one shortly after five o'clock and the other about eight o'clock. No serious damage is reported from the earthquake,} although in large warehouses some light glassware snffered. The shock was felt at Otaki at 5.25, but no damage was done. At Lower Hutt four chimneys in Mr Biddiford's house were knocked down. NEW PLYMOUTH, June 27. A smart shock of earthquake, lasting about half a minute, was felt yeaterday morning at 5.16. CARTERTON. June 27. There was a very severe earthquake at 5.20 yesterday morning. Soveral chimneys are down, windows broken, and glassware destroyed, especially the lattor in the hotels, but nothing serious. FEATHERSTONE, June 27. A very sevore shook of earthquakeoccurrcd at a quarter-post five yesterday morning. Old Bottlers say that it is the heaviest felt since IS6-4. PALMERSTON NORTH, June 26. A terrible shock of earthquake was experienced here this morning at, 5.25, which was followed by fivo or six slight shocks. A considerable amount of damage was done. Nino chimnios out of ten have been carried away, and several windows have been broken. Great excitement prevails in town. Large parties aro viaiting tha ruiop, and the Mttoria aro greatly excited. It ia reported that Fcxton also suffered severely. WANGANUI, Juno 27. A very sevore shock of earthquake occurred at 523 a.m. on Sunday. Considerable damago was done to chimneys and in store l , where glassware and crockerywaro fell. The brick houses in Wanganui stood all right. It was the severest shock felt for many years. Soveral other slight shocks have been felt since. GREYMODIH, June 26 At a quarter post five this morning there was three sharp- shocks of earthquake. Some people say thot they felt a shock last night shortly after lOo'olock, but that is not ao well verified.
