fPEE PRESS ASSOCIATION.] AUCKLAND, June 24. Obituary. Mr Ot. T. Chapman, publisher, an old colonist, who started the first Mechanics' Institute in Dunedin, died to-day. Legal. In the case Johnston v Smith, a claim for damages for a kick sustained by Johnston's boy through defendant's racehorse exercising in Albert Park under permit from the City Council, Judge] Macdonald held that the Council had no power to give such permit, therefore Smith was acting illegally. The Mail Steamer's Passengers. Mr Q. IT. Adams, in a published letter,gives doleful accounts of the wretched condition of the passengers quarantined at Motupipi. Railway ExtensionAt a public meeting at Cambridge re tho Cambridge railway, resolutions wero passed in favor of its speedy prosecution. The Telephone. A telephone exchange is to be started immediately that the minimum number of subscribers has been obtained. TIMABU, June 24. Alleged Incendiarism. A man named John Tait was arrested today for setting fire to a slaughter-house on the premises of one Johnston, near Timaru. The arrest was the result of an inquiry hold to-day. DUNEDIN", Juno 24, The Vacant PortfolioIt was rumored here to day that Mr Oliver had definitely acoepted the Public Works portfolio. Vested Interests. A meeting was held to-day to protest against the abolition of the bottle license. Delegates were appointed to proceed to Wellington by the first steamer.
Lazy Officials. Complaints were made in the Resident Magistrates' Court to-day against the bailiffs both at Wellington and Dunedin for dilatoriness in serving summonses. In the Dunedin ease an inquiry will be held, and in the Wellington case the defaulting bailiff was ordered to pay the costs that the plaintiff had been put to. Aid to the Disaffected. One hundred pounds has been forwarded from Dunedin to the treasurer of the Irish National Land League. Crime For the criminal sittings on July 4th there are 14 oases, 1 of rape, 1 of attempted rape, 2 of larceny, 1 of burglary, 1 of bestiality, 2 of housebreaking and larceny, 1 of fraudulent bankruptcy, 1 of receiving stolen property, 1 of attempted suicide, and one of attempted theft. Hannah, the driver of the Roslyn tram car, is charged with manslaughter, and Moritzon comes up for sentonce for embezzlement. Clutha River Steam Dredge. Tho Olutha River Board of Conservators are going to purchase a steamer in London to I dredge tho rivor. ABHBURTON, June 24. Dangers of Kerosine. Through the falling of a kerosene lamp tor, ight the wooden promises and stock of Mr Rvixton, the tailor in Peter street, were bur.ied. Quill's hotel was saved.
