[PBH PRESS ASSOCIATION.] AUCKLAND, June 22. The Mail Steamer. The City of New York declined to go last night without a pilot and sailed at daybreak. The Harbor Board was averse to furnishing one, as ho would be quarantined or taken to San Francisco. The quarantine keeper refused to fumigate the mail without the presence of the Post Office officers, and the letters only arrived this afternoon. The steamer's passengers are grumbling terribly at their quarantine. The Auckland cargo has been landed and sprinkled with carbolic acid, WELLINGTON, June 22, The Cental System. At a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce, the following resolution was carried :—“ That this Chamber is desirous of bringing under the notice of the Government the desirability of introducing the decimal system of weights and measures, and that the Government be urged to pave the way by using the cental, or lOOlbs, in Government contracts, in railway carriage and in Customs returns.” Frozen Meat. A large meeting was held at Carterton this morning in reference to the frozen meat and dairy produce trade. An influential committee was appointed to take the necessary steps to co-operate with a similar movement at Wellington and on the West Coast. DUNEDIN, June 22. Sir Julius. Sir Julius Vogel has presented a South African diamond embedded in clay to the Otago Museum. In his letter he adds, “It is my hope that this little specimen may lead to a search after diamonds in Now Zealand. A high authority has told me that it is almost certain diamonds are to be found in New Zealand. I should like, if possible, that the Otago Museum should lend the specimen to some one at Hokitika, and at the Thames, in order to exhibit it there for a short time, as the miners of those places as well as of Otago should see it. But I leave this purely to the discretion of the museum.” A Hew Crusher. Ashcroft’s patent quartz crusher is being tested at the local exhibition. The loss is £250 over the inauronoe. Inquest. At the inquest on McEhenny, a verdict of accidental death was returned. No blame was attached to the tram driver. INVERCARGILL, June 22. The Tararua Disaster. The sea is still at intervals casting ashore bodies of those drowned in the Tararua. Constable Noeston, who is stationed at Waipapa, reports that on the 12th ho found the body of a man almost naked. The fingers and features were gone, and there were no marks that could load to identification. On the 16th, the body of a woman was found on the beach, but although it has suffered more than the other, it is supposed to be that of the wife of Denz, one of the crew of the ill-fated ship. Salmon Alive. Mr Anderson, of Strathmore, while crossing the river at Bayswater ford recently, observed a fish about two feet in length, which he is positive was a salmon.
