Henderson, Wright, and Wallace, prisoners for the Ferret fraud, were discovered while making an attempt to escape from prison on Friday. The prisoners obtained files, putty, oil, and lamps, and Henderson had partially sawn through the window bars, when a warder discovered the attempt. Application has been made in Chambers for the restoration of the funds taken from Henderson at the time of his arrest, which it is alleged is not in any way connected with the charge. The Judge finally authorised the payment of £250 to Henderson. The latest news from Mount Brown is satisfactory. 1500 people are on the ground, earning from £3 to£ls weekly. The "Argus” correspondent says that there is plenty of water, and any industrious man can do well. The "Insurance and Banking Seoord ” calls attention to the balance-sheet of the Dixon Patent Gas Company, the capital of which has reached the market value of £230,000. The original £1 shares are now selling at £3. Patents for the new gas. which is claimed to bo cheap and superior, have been applied for in thirty-three countries, including the colony of New Zealand, but no person knows the real value of the invention at present save the inventor. The agricultural statistics for Victoria for the year ended March show :—Under tillage, 1,994,000 'acres. The gross yield of wheat was 9,719,000 bushels ; average yield, 9.9 bushels, against 13 3 bushels for the previous year.
