A return haa been issued showing the deposits received and paid by the Post Offioe Savings Banks of the colony, together with the expenses of jworking the department for'the year 1880. throughout the whole colony there were 81660 deposits, amounting to £864,441; an increase of about £52,000 over the previous year, and a larger amount than has been received in any one year before since the Savings Banks were established. The withdrawals numbered 57,446, and amounted to £780,504; or about £90,000 less than in 1879. The exoess of deposits over withdrawals was £83,937. In the previous year there was an excess of withdrawals over deposits of £63,781. The cost of management during

the year was £3500, £SOO in excess of 1879. 16,137 acoounts were opened, and 12,217 closed during the year. There were 38,667 remaining open, and the total amount stand* ing to the credit of all open accounts, inclusive at the close of the year of interest, was £903,765. The following are the figures for the principal cities in the oolony: Auokland, 9477 deposits, amounting to £106,819; 6610 withdrawals, amounting to £95,987 ; excess of deposits over withdrawal, £10,832; 1918 aooounts were opened and 1422 closed, 5008 remaining open. Christchurch, 18,218 deposits, amounting to £201,592; 13,770 withdrawals, amounting to £186,141; excess of deposits, £15,451; 3845 aooounts were opened and 2977 closed, 8732 remaining open. Dunedin, 17,385 deposits, amounting to £172,301; 11,733 withdrawals, amounting to £152,274; excess of deposits, £20,026; 3004 accounts were opened and 2163 closed, 7284 remaining open. Wellington, 13,059 deposits, amounting to £117,268 ; 9775 withdrawals, amounting to £118,677; excess of withdrawals over deposits, £1398; 2159 accounts were opened and 2074 closed, 5718 remaining open.
