Great Britain pays the United States £15,000 to settle the Fortune Bay (Newfoundland) Fishery dispute, which has existed for some time between the two countries. Their Boyal Highness the Dnke and Duchess of Connaught have opened the London International Wool Exhibition. Some good machinery and fabrics are exhibited, but the Australian wools shown are in very small quantities and not specially good. A large number of exhibits have not yet been arranged. The exhibition as a whole is a poor one. Prince Bismarck, the German Imperial Chancellor, has submitted to the Beichstag a memorial, based on reports furnished by the German Consul-General of Australia, which complains that the German trade is beaten by England, France, and America, and recommends that a commission-house be established at a German seaport for the furtherance of the export trade. It is further recommended that a line of steamers should trade between China, the South Seas, and Australia, for the maintenance of which a State subvention is urged. A scurrilous letter, written by the Treasurer of the Irish Land League, has been discussed in the House of Commons. Mr Gladstone was severe on Mr Parnell for claiming the Treasurer of the League as a friend. Mr Gladstone further stated that Ireland was being disgraced by terrorism. Mr Henry Pease, a prominent member of the Society of Friends and a well-known philanthropist, is dead. June 2.
