ROAD HOARDS.

MOUNT SOMERS was hold at the Road Board office, Mount Somers, on Friday, June 3rd. Present— Messrs A. E. Poaohe (chairman), W. O. Walker, J. B. Taylor, Duncan Cameron, and J. Hood. The surveyor’s report was read. The consideration of the report was deferred until the first ordinary meeting of the new Board. A letter was read from Mr O. P. Cox, requesting to be furnished with a list of ratepayers residing in the separated portion of the Mount Somers district. The clerk stated that Mr Cox had been supplied with the information requested. Mr Cox also wrote with reference to the additional places at which the electoral roll was open for inspection. Mr J. 0. 8011, returning officer, wrote re elections. The Ashburton County 1 Council forwarded cheques for £309 12s 3d, amount of promised subsidy or Alford Forest Eushroad, and £27 12a 6d in payment for half cost valuation list and copy. The clerk stated that the receipt of the above cheques had been duly acknowledged. The clerk was directed to forward the Board’s cheque for £219 17s 3d to the County Council in payment for balance on Ashburton bridges, and twelve maps of the district. The Menawatu County Council wrote informing the Board of the postponement of the conference of chairmen of local bodies. Accounts amounting to £513 5s 4d having been passed, the Board adjourned, A meeting of the new Board was hold subsequently. Present— Messrs Walker, Poaohe, Taylor, Cameron and Tisch. Mr Taylor proposed, Mr Walker seconded, and it was carried—“ That Mr A. E. Poache bo chairman for the ensuing year.” A letter wos read from Mr J. O. Bell, returning officer, stating that at a meeting of ratepayers held that day, the following gentlemen had been elected to serve on the Mount Somers Road Board for the ensuing year, no other candidates having been nominated: — Mr William Campbell Walker, Mr Isaac Edward Taylor, Mr Duncan Conway, Mr Alfred Edward Peache, Mr Philip Tisch. Tenders were opened for the formation of Wright’s road, near North Hinds. The Board declined to accept any tender for this work. Mr Walker moved—“ That a letter be written to the chairman of the Rangitata Road Board proposing a speedy settlement of accounts, leaving the preliminary steps in the hands of the chairman, and, until such settlement is arrived at, that none but absolutely necessary work be undertaken.” Mr Taylor seconded the motion, which was agreed to. It was further resolved, that the chairman be requested to call a special meeting of the Board as soon as he has anything to report. Mr D. Cameron proposed, Mr Tisch seconded, and it was carried—“ That, in order to preserve continuance of action, this Board is prepared to take up the position of the late Board in respect of existing contracts, &c.” The clerk was directed to prepare a statement of assets and liabilities as eoon as possible, and the Board then adjourned.

MANDEVILLE AND EANGIOEA

The usual monthly meeting of this Board was held on June 3rd. Present—Messrs A. Parsons (chairman), Duncan, j Edwards and Sansom, Correspondence was read from Mr W. Nioholl, respecting Fernsido road. It was resolved to have repairs asked for at once seen to. Mr Duncan presented a letter from the Mandeville and Bangiora Board of Conservators, asking the Boad Board to 00-ope-rate with the Byreton Boad Board in lengthening a bridge at Flaiton, and it was decided to communicate with the Eyreton Board. Besolved—“ That applications be invited for the office of clerk and surveyor to the Board by the next meeting.’ ’ Besolved—“ That all defaulting payers of drainage rates be summoned after June 14th.” Accounts were passed amounting to £135 19s 9d and the Board adjourned. ASHLEY. The monthly meeting of this Board was held at the Boad Board office, Ashley, on Thursday, Juno 2nd. Present—Messrs Hodgson, Nichols, and Croft. Mr Hodgson was voted to the chair. The following correspondence was read : —Prom Messrs Vaughan and Oordnor re claim on contract 6th section Kuku Pass road. Clerk reported that by direction of the chairman he had replied. From J, S. Buxton, asking that Terrace road, from Mr Feathers as far as Grey river, be shingled. Clerk reported that ho had replied. From Mr W. Whatman, stating that he would oppose the proposed road through section No. 8871, owing to the extra distance he would have to go round to get access to his property, section 31464 He also offered to give the land free of cost on sections 30664 and 31464 for any deviation that may be required from the present road line. Consideration deferred to next meeting. From Mr Dobson, 0.8., in reference to Kuku Pass road. Clerk to reply. From Messrs George and Henry Fisher, requesting the Board to erect a fence adjoining their projerty at gravel reserve No. 2057. Ordered to }e done. From Hon, E. Bichardson, asking for certain improvements to be done on roads at Glentui—namely, improving part of road from Glentui to Ashley Gorge bridge. Ordered to bo done. Improving cutting on north-east side of Glentui creek. Ordered to be done. Continuation of road from saw mill to top of terrace. To be considered when saw mill is opened. Continuation of Bald Hill’s road as far as Scrub yards, Besolved that about 19 chains of the above road be formed. Clerk instructed to report on road leading to bush west side of Glentui creek to next meeting. Mr Barclay, on behalf of Mr Williams, interviewed the Board and urged the necessity of getting the road formed along section 31464 and part of 32238. Consideration deferred to next meeting. Captain Million, Mr Million, junr., and Mr E. H. Brown waited ‘on the Board, and asked that a road be formed, and a cutting made in to the Garry so as to enable them to get to their Bush sections. To be considered first full meeting of Board. Mr Million asked that the cutting into the Ashley, near Trig Pole Gully, be improved. Granted. Mr Brown asked that a soft part of (he road, north-west of Pile bridge, Hayland, be improved. Deferred to a full meeting of Board, Besolved sunk to such depth as will ensure a good supply of water.” The following works were ordered to be done —Forming road from Glentui road to Birch hill station ; reforming main road from Fahey’s to Grey cutting ; consideration of a road from No. 2 road to Okuku left over for the present. Besolved— “ That members inspect certain roads in the district, with the view of getting gorse cleared off the same.” Clerk intimated that roads closed by 0. Whitefoord, Esq., E.M., had been gazetted; also, the establishment of public pound, and the appointment of Mr Prank Hardy as poundkeeper. Besolved—“ That pound be opened on June 3rd inst.” On application the following were granted one month’s extension of ime to complete contracts: —Thos. Croft John Busch, Paul Graham, Philip Brady, Bdwd. Nohelty, and James Brown. F. Highwood, granted one month; if work is not completed by that time, fine to be inflicted. William Bichards and Denis Fitzgerald, granted two weeks. Joseph Upritchard, application for an extension of time was not entertained. Accounts amounting to £492 Is lOd were passed for payment, and the Board adjourned.
