COMMERCIAL.
The import market has not been characterised during the past week by a much more buoyant feeling. Sales are of course being mado'to an increased extent at the present period of the mouth, but the business passing through bands does not call for any special notice. Since our last report the Remington and Abemyte have put in an appearance from London, and the Lurlino is now looked for daily. Advices by the mail report a moderate amount of activity amongst American sh.ppingjfor this port, Ihe Bryn Ivor sailed from Boston Ifor Dunedin and Lyttelton on the 26th April, and the brig Camille from New York for Auckland and Lyttelton on 31st March. The barque C. A. Littlefield, here some time ago, was loading at New York for Lyttelton direct, and was expected to sail about the 25th May. In goods we note a few sales of teas, both in boxes and half-chests, principally of the medium and low qualities. Importers are cutting these lines very low at present. Van Honten’s cocoa on the spot is not plentiful, and fall rates are obtainable, viz., 4s_6d. Oilmen’s stores have only seen sorting up enquiry. Mellor’s sauce has been taken ia fair quantity lately at usual rates. Ordinary test oil is being sold at Is lOdto Is Ud. Stocks of high test have dwindled to a very low ebb, and holders of spot lots are getting 2s 2d. Fencing wire, more especially No. 8, has been sold in quantity, chiefly fer country orders, at £l7 to £l7 ss. Other sizes have had little inquiry. Galvanised corrugated iron has been in moderately active demand, and prices for spot lots have been firm. The market will now be fully supplied by the shipments coming to hand from the two vessels discharging. Ploughshares have been moving freely lately. Nothing new can bo noted in spirits of any kind. The same may be said of ale and stout in bottle. Wines are without inquiry outside of trade lots.
