EDUCATION BOARD.
The ordinary meeting of the Education Board of the district of North Canterbury was held yesterday afternoon. There wore present —Messrs Inglis (in the chair), Tancred, Peryman, Cunningham, Wobb, Booth, Bowen, and Bev Chas. Fraser.
A statement of business done by the chairman since lust meeting wag read and approved. The secretary read a memorandum explanatory of the system of pupil teachers' examination, arising out of a disoussion on the motion of Mr Feryman. The explanation was accepted. Inspectors' reports on several schools were laid upon the table. The re- arrangement of the staff of female teachers in the main school, Hast Christchurch, was sanctioned. A letter was read from the chairman of the Ei
East Christchurch School Committee, conveying information relative to the qualifications of Mr Wright, of Victoria. The Board agreed to wait the result of Mr Wright's examination. A letter was read from the West Christchurch school committee as follows ; To the Chairman, &c, In order to correct a wrong impression, bo far as the 'West Christ church School is concerned, I am directed to forward the following resolution passed at the last meeting of the committee, also to enclose a copy of the result of late examination of pupil teachers- Resolved —" That statements having been made public to the effect that the pupil teachers of the town schools have been less successful than those of the country schools, the committee desire to bring under the notice of the Board the fact that all pupil teachers from West Christchurch School passed with conspicuous credit, as the returns of the results will show. In confirmation of the above the committee forward a copy of that return. B. H. Guise, Secretary pro tern. The letter was ordered to be received. The Bev. Charles Fraier moved, in accordance with notice, as follows :—" That the inspectors be instructed, in the examination of schools, to examine specially and report on the oondition and promise of pupil teachers, and the amount of instruction given them in general education and matters of teaching." Mr O. C. Bowen eeoonded the resolution, which, after a brief disoustion, was carried unanimously. Tenders for the erection of a sohool at Lismore were opened, and that of Baker Bros., £463, was accepted. The question of a site for a school at Waikari was left in the hands of the chairman. A lotter was reoeived from Lakeside- School committee requesting the Board to take over a room which had been used as a library, and was attached to the sohool. The Board agreed to take it over at a valuation. The committee had asked £35 as the price. The Board thought this too high. An application for further expenditure for fencing at Little Kiver was deferred. Some matters of routine were disposed of, after whioh the Board went into committee, and, on resuming, adjourned.
