The following oensus returns for the colonies are published in the Melbourne " Argus" :—,
Population. In--1871. 1881. New South Wales Z 803,900 750.80 C 246,000 New Zealand 256,300 t89,5r0 233,200 Tictoria 731,500 855,500 124,000 South Australia 180,000 277,500 91,500 Tasmania 92,300 115,600 16,300 In the order of percentage increase the colonies are placed thus : —New Zealand, 90 cent.; South Australia, 49 per cent. ; New South Wales, 48 per cent.; Victoria, 17 per cent.; Tasmania, 16 per cent.
