SYDENHAM BOROUGH COUNCIL.
A special meeting of thia body wu held lait evening in ths Council Chamber. Present His Worship the Major and all the councillors, except Cr. Lnngdown. The Mayor stated the object of the meeting, whioh was called pursuant to a resolution passed at the late public meeting ia Sydenham on the drainage question. Or.
Joyce moved, and Or. Forrester seconded, i resolution to the effect—" That the resolution! ae lent to the Council by the public meeting referred to be received, and copies thereof forwarded to the Drainage Board; and also that the Couuoil attend as a deputation at the next meeting of that body in support of same." The resolution on being put was unanimously agreed to. Or. Joyce asked if any of the £IO,OOO proposed to be allocated to Sydenham for pipes could be used for side channelling. Or. White replied he did not think there was the slightest chance of it. Or. Joyce would suggest that a series of questions should bo drawn up and sent to the Drainage Board, and that body be asked to give a plain yes or no to the deputation on each of them. Ho had calculated that when the drainage of the district was completed, an annual charge of £30,000 would accrue, of which Sydenham would have to find £7OOO or £BOOO. Ho hoped that they would not be humbugged by the Board, remembering what the promises of that body in 1877 were worth, and how the ratepayers were lulled thereby, awaking subsequently to find what a tremendous expenditure was involved. The Mayor said they would object to nothing that was fair. He thought if a fixed principle was laid down the question could be settled by arbitration, but he believed it would be best for Sydenham to speak out boldly, and say she would pay interest only on what was spont within the borough, and no more. After a desultory iisoussion, Or. Joyce moved, Or. Pavitt seconded, and it was carried nem con—" That i committee be appointed to draw up a series >f questions to be submitted to the Drainage Board, suoh committee to consist of Ors. Pavitt, Hall, Andrew, Langdown, and Joyce chairman)." The meeting then terminated.
