THE COUNCIL AND THE TRAMWAY

COMPANY. To the alitor of the Globe.

Sib, —A story ia told by " The Man in the Street " how a director in a certain company was exclaiming loudly at the corner of the impertinence ;of those fellows in the City Council daring to make laws affecting them and their interest, when he was asked by one of his listeners what were his objections to the by-law. The admission had to be made by the director that he had not read them ; but had been told so-and-so by So-and-80. If this is true, it possibly explains the gross ignorance displayed by your correspondents in last night's Giobe. The very small portion of their letters which did not consist of personal abuse of your humble servant, was, well, misleading; and they were poking fun at your numerous readers, or know nothing of the subjeot in dispute. If the cause of the writers is so just and popular, why are they afraid to affix their signatures to their productions ? It's possible, sir, if they were to do so, the public would have another experience of the unselfishness of mankind in the presnnt day. As can be proved by the minutes, this necessary by-law (which in the future will be found very useful in preventing disputes, and perhaps heavy legal expenses, between a powerful and popular company and the local authorities) was unanimously passed by the City Oounoil, not even His Worship dissenting, or those members who had disposed of their shares, to leave themselves free to vote on tramway matters. Why your correspondents should do me the honour of advertising my name so many times in your valuable paper, and at your expense, when there were so many older and wiser councillors engaged in the deadly deed, is very puzzliDg to Yours, &c, C. P. HULBEET. Christchurcb, May 31st.
