[By Telegraph.] [Per b.s. Ringarooma at tho Bluff J [AGE SPBCILAB J LONDON, May 16. Serious disturbances have arisen amongst the Chinese employed by the Pacific Railway Company in tho construction of tho branch lince at Yal, in Nebraska. Over 2000 Chinese are on a strike, and there has been rioting of a dangerous character. A fearful storm has occurred at Calcutta, doing a large amount of damage to property. Three lives were lost. Alexander Stanley Hill, the Conservative member for Staffordshire West, has given notice in the House of Commons of his intention to move on June 14th a resolution declaring that it is desirable that measures should be taken to bring about closer legislative union between the colonies and the British Empire. There is soma probability of Hanlan, the champion oarsman, visiting Australia. Overtures have been made to him by a cricketing team, which will atart for Australia shortly, and to induce him to accompany them on their tour negotiations arc now in progress with that ob ject.
The Soutnern districts of Ireland are very disturbed. At Killarney serious riots have taken place, owing to the opposition offered by the peasantry to evictions. The police were assaulted.
Mr O’Halloran has been appointed paid Assistant-Secretary to the Royal Colonial Institute.
May 18. Intelligence from India states that tho latest information concerning the movements of Ayoub Khan at Herat is disquieting. May 21. On tho newly elected Conservative member for Knaresborough presenting himself to the House of Commons to take tho oaths. Sir Wilfred Lawson, in accordance with his previously announced intention, proceeded to examine him on the nature of his religious belief. The Speaker, however, interposed and frustrated Sir Wilfred by ruling him out of order. An enormous number of amendments will bo proposed to the Irish Land Bill in committe, notices of which have been already given. Owing to tho continuance of outrages in Ireland, and tho disturbed sta o of the country the troops stationed there have been largely reinforced. The Island of Chios has been visited by another shock of earthquake. Considerable damage has boon done, and tho utmost consternation prevails among tho inhabitonts. The silver mine in Dakota territory, United States, has collapsed. The miners who were working there were in great danger, but wore fortunately rescued without any loss of life. During the unsettled state of affairs in St. Petersburg, where further attempts of assassination by Nihilists are feared, tho Czar has determined upon transferring his residence to Moscow, tho old capital of the empire, and appealing to tho national sentiment. This decision on tho part of tho Czar has been received with enthusiasm by the inhabitants of Moscow.
Th 1 increasing emigration from Sweden to Iho United States has excited ’serious anxiety to the Swedish Government, who purpose submitting to the Diet legislative measures, with the object of checking the cfllux of population.
