COUNCILLOR CHERRILL AND THE PAPERS.

Councillor Chebrxll has written ns a long letter, giving his views on the question of the Tramway By-law. We do not propose just now to refer to the main points raised by Or. Cherrill, but there is just one part of his letter to which we should like to direct attention. Or. Cherrill coincides with a correspondent in his regret that the discussion on the by-law was not reported. Had this been done, even in the most condensed form, it would have occupied the whole of the morning papers. The discussion commenced shortly after 8 p.m., and did not conclude ill nearly 11 p.m., during which period, as it was a free discussion, all the members spoke so frequently and so copiously that it would have required a Municipal “ Hansard” to have given their eloquence to the world. As the by-law itself formed so integral a part of the discussion, why did not the Council, if so much importance was attached to this matter, take means to place it before the public through the advertising columns of the papers ? The public were not overwhelmingly interested in the utterances of Councillors, but they were in seeing what proposals were made for the regulation of the Tramways. We are, therefore, unable to join with Cr. Cherrill in his regret that the debate was not reported. Indeed we can come to no other conclusion than that the public have been mercifully and wisely spared what would have been a heavy infliction, and that the reporters, so far from being blamed, are to be commended for their discrimination on the occasion.
