Despatches received by the Government from tho commander of the French forces in Tunis state that tho opposition of the Native tribes to tho advance of the French troops has been entirely overcome, the Arabs having been everywhere repulsed. NEW ZEALAND. (PUB PBBS9 ASSOCIATION.) Arrest. ASHBURTON, May 23. A man named Cheriton was arrested on Friday, charged with bigamy at Oamaru in 1879. Ho was brought before the Resident Magistrate on Saturday evening, and remanded to Oamaru. NAPIER, May 23. Accident. Henry Moore, a seaman on board the ketch Venus, was washed overboard off Portland Island. Tho sea was too heavy to launch a boat, and tho man was drowned, AUCKLAND, May 23. Another Robbery. The City Council’s contractor’s deposit, £7, was abstracted from the tendor-box. The circumstances point to some employee. Death on the Railway LineAn old man named Davidson was found dead on the Kaiwarra railway. Tho enginedriver saw a dark object on tho line, stopped the engine, and put tho breaks down, but could not stop till twenty yards past tho spot. On returning ho found the man .with his arm completely severed, but the body singularly was quite cold, and no blood isaued from tho wound. Tho old man waa in the habit of walking along tho lino to his son’s house, and it is supposed he fell dead during the journey. He was seventy-five yeare old. Buggy Accident. Alfred Wood, son of Dr. Wood, with a friend, was returning from a drive on Sunday evening, when tho buggy struck a atone, throwing Wood out. He waa picked up unconscious, and taken to tho Hospital. His life is despaired of. Head Master. The Board of Governors of tho Grammar School to-day decided on the conditions to bo communicated to the English Commissioners, delegated to appoint a head master, at a salary of £7OO a year. The foes for tho Upper School to bo increased from £8 to £lO. WELLINGTON, May 23, The Mails. The Zealandia, with tho London mails of 21st ult., left Sun Francisco for Auckland on Sunday, tho Bth inst., ono day lute. The City of Sydney with the colonial mails arnvad at San Francisco on the 18th, one day to advance.
