I’rEK PBESS ASSOCIATION.] AUCKLAND, May 19. Upheaval. At ten o’clock yesterday morning, Mr Hedley, Government Surveyor, observed from the steamer Glocelg a remarkable eruption between Slipper and Mayor Islands, situated at the northern end of the Bay of Plenty. The water rose suddenly to the height of four feet, and spread over a radius of sixfy feet, throwing up sand, shells, stones and mud. The steamer was only about twenty yards outside the circle. The water kept boiling for some time. Sickness. Scarlet fever of a mild typo is very prevalent in the city. It is believed to have been spread by the negligence of parents sending the children of infected fami'ies to school. Accident. Bennet, a half-caste, had a kneecap completely smashed through his fal'mg from a bridge at Mercury Bay.
Legal. A largo number of cases have again been adjourned at the Resident Magistrate's Court in consequence of the absence of the magistrate at Wellington, causing great in* convenience and loss to litigants. GISBORNE, May 19. More Light. A movement is on foot for lighting the town of Gisborne with gas. Struck Oil. A successful experiment was made last night by Mr W. Clarke on the new paraffin-mineral, lately discovered in the district. A company is in course of formation. WELLINGTON, May 19, Divorce CourtThe Divorce Court concluded its business this morning. Decrees nisi were granted in the following oases : —Hodley v Hedley (Wellington), Wilson v Wilson (Wellington) j Mudgway v Mudgway (Wellington). Rifle Shooting. The Wellington Biflo Association meeting, which commences on Saturday, promises to be a groat success. Over fifty entries have been received. PALMERSTON NORTH, May 19. Alleged Libel. The editor of the “Munawatu Times” has been committed for trial on two charges of libel. Ho has instructed his solicitor to take proceedings against Mr McMinn, of the "Manawatu Star,” for libel. DUNEDIN, May 19. Suicide. The jury returned a verdict of temporary insanity at the inquest on the death of P. H. Kirk, expressman, who was last night found hanging, INVERCARGILL, May 19. Irish Land League. Mr J. Maher, president of the local branch of the Irish Land League, has received a letter from Mr O. S. Parnell, thanking him for the efforts on behalf of the cause, which he is glad is so well understood here. For better protection, he says, the financial headquarters of the League have been removed to Paris.
NEW PLYMOUTH, May 19. Accident* accident happened at the harbor-works yesterday afternoon. The foreman, MoDonald, waa engaged conveying on a trolly a large piece of ironwork, and, whilst going np, the email incline’s wheels got blocked by a stone. McDonald removed the stone, whereupon the wheels moved, and he was knocked down and considerably hurt. NAPIER, May 19. Two Wives. Robt. Gallagher, on a charge of bigamy, has been committed for trial. Prisoner, when living at Auckland, in 1868, made the acquaintance of a woman named Alice Rigley, and lived with her for about two years. At the instigation of friends, they were married by the Rev. Father McDonald, in St. Patrick’s Church. Before her intimacy with Gallagher, Alice lived with Geo. Hird. In 1872, Gallagher met Eliza White in Auckland. She went to Wellington, and met him there. She met him again five years ago at Napier, and was married to him, not knowing ho was previously married to Alice. Gallagher does not bear a good character, and ho had lived separated from his last wife, after giving her a jromondous thrashing. Water Extension. Jan. Stewart, formerly District Engineer for Auckland, has been appointed consulting engineer in the matter of the water extension supply for the Borough.
