NEW ZEALAND. [per press association.] CHARLESTON, May 13. Bursting of Dams. The Government dam was carried away on Thursday night, taking with it Messrs Gregory and Boner's dam ; also, everything below it, and very nearly with less of life. The damage is considerable, and will cause almost a total cessation of mining operations in the district. DUNEDIN, May 13. Fire. Grange Store, Fourth street, was burned down yesterday. The building was insured in the Transatlantic for £4OO, and the stock and furniture in the same office for £350. Mr Thompson, the owner, estimates his loss at £550 above the insurances. Municipal Hard-upness. Vincent County has reached the end of its financial tether. The Bank refused further advances, and requested a reduction of th® overdraft. Tararua Belief Fund. The Garrick Club had a crowded house in aid of the Tararua fund. Through the Mill. Three insolvencies occurred this week. The principal was that of John Morrison Innes, Mosgiel, storekeeper; debts £1935, assets TIM ABU, May 13. Self-Stabbing. At the Magistrate’s Court, this morning, Michael Quirk was charged with having attempted suicide in the Park by stabbing himself. The man was discharged from the Hospital only this morning, and woe immediately arrested by Detective Kirby. He was committed for trial, but liberated in hia own recognisance of £SO. WANGANUI, May 13. Fire. A fire occurred last night in the Post Office here, between eleven and twelve o’clock. It originated in the store-room, which is damaged, as well as the roof. The origin of the fire is unknown. The damage is estimated at £IOO, insured. The telegraph and mails are uninjured.
