GREAT WHIRLWIND AT GREYMOUTH.
SECOND EDITION.
£4OOO BLOWN AWAY. [pee feess association.] GEE I’MOUIH, May 12. At about 5.30 this morning a species of whirlwind from the South-west raged through the town, leaving its course marked by wrecked houses. Chimnyes were blown dowr, and verandahs and fences carried sway. It began by blowing down a large pfle-drirer : then wrecked most of the houses on the west side of Mack ay street ; smashed up a new two-storied building, used as a Chinese store, and owned by Wy Kee ; blew cue end out of the Great Western HotcL The next place of importance which suffered was the English Church, one half of which was utterly smashed np, while the part left standing was twisted on the piles. The parsonage, also, was considerably damaged. A good deal of minor injury was done to private dwellings. At length the whirlwind struck an adjacent hill, whereupon all trace of it was lost. The last house injured was that of Mr Perkins, lawyer, who lives on the slope of the hill. His verandah roof was carried away a distance of fifty yards, and some of the trees in his garden were broken by the wind. The total damage is estimated at £4OOO.
