BOARD OF CONSERVATORS.

A meeting of the Waimakariri Board of Conservators was held yesterday afternoon. Present—Messrs F. Jones (in the chair), W. White, jun., Peryman, Boag, Attwood, Atkinson, and Lambert. The Chairman reported the result of the works committee's visit to the protective works, and read a report from the foreman of works, who made certain recommendations as to willow planting, &o. Mr Peryman moved—" That the works committee be empowered to carry out the recommendations of the foreman as to planting." Seoonded by Mr Boag and carried. The only other item in the report, that referring to the trespass of oattle, was also referred to the works committee.

The Chairman reported that the returns as to rateable property in the district not being in yet, the finance committee were not in a position to enter further into the matter at present. In considering the question of the Board's finances, The Chairman remarked that the interest payable on debentures was rather heavy this month. He enumerated the other items of ordinary expenditure, the whole amount recommended for payment being £664 8s 6d. It was necessary to mention that this would run them slightly into debt. The present bank balance was £545 13s 4d, and when the month's accounts were paid they would be overdrawn £llß 15s 2d. He would point out, howover, that the expenses of this month were unreasonably heavy, and they had nothing at present in the shape of rovenue from rate?. After some conversational discussion, The Chairman drew attention to the resolu tion re the rate passed at last meeting, which he thought it would be necessary to amend. They had fixed a due date, and he believed now that they had no power to do so ; at least, their action would be inoperate, as the local bodies had not yet given notice as to collection. On the motion of Mr Lambert, the accounts wore approved and passed for payment. At the suggestion of Mr White, it was decided that the chairman of the finance committee wait upon the manager of the Board's bank to arrange re overdraft. The question of the collection of the rate was then considered. Mr White moved that that portion of the resolution passed at last meeting, fixing adate for the collection of the rate, be rescinded. Seconded by Mr Lambert, and carried unanimously. The Chairman intimated that this was all tho business arising out of the minutes, and there was no correspondence. Tbe Board then adjourned.
