A meeting of the mnmb-rs of the above was held at the office of Mr F. Pearce last night, Mr Buchanan in the chair. Tho resolution of the committee, recommending Mr F. Pearce for appointment as manager of the association, waß rend. Mr Hell moved " That Mr F. Pearce bo appointed as manager of tho Sickness and Accident Association." Mr Reyoraft seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously. Mr Pearce speke hs to his thanks for the confidence displayed by the members. This curae at a most opportune moment, a« ho had felt that hi 3 connection with the lato firm of Draper, Charters and Co. might influence his election. As the matter had been made tho subject of newspaper comment, he might say that he had not the slightest knowledge that any funds of the Building Society had been retained —[laughter] by Mr Charters. He was quite innocent of any knowledge of that kind, and indeed had on one occasion, when some subscription! were retained in bond, brought the matter under the notice of the directors. Whatever other transactions of the firm there were, whioh would not bear looking into, he was perfectly and entirely innocent of any guilty knowledge. A letter was read from Mr L. E. Nathan, asking whether the Sickness and Accident Association had commenced business, and whether any or what funds were in hand, or how invested. Mr Pearce said he had iorwarded a letter to Mr Nathan, with a statement of receipts and expenditure of tho association, showing that what remained to the credit of the Association, after paying preliminary expenses and one claim, had been duly lodged at the Bank of New Zealand. Tho toaiety numbered come 145 members, and there was a large amount of money to be collected in the way of subscriptions, which now he was appointed he would endeavour to get in. A vote of thsnk« to the chairman ooncluded the business.
