A telegram from Archbishop Steins, Bomon Catholic Bishop of Auckland, who left for Europe via Sydney in ill-health, reports that he is iO much worse, that he remains at Sydney, being unable to proceed on his journey, NEW PLYMOUTH, May 10. Wilkinson’s Sentence. At the Supreme Court, Wilkinson, charged with embezzling moneys belonging to the Government, at Hawera, waa egeia arraigned on a second charge, and the trial lasted the whole day. At about 9 o'clock last evening the jury retired, and after twenty minutes* consideration they returned with a verdict of “ Guilty," but they recommended the prisoner to mercy, on the ground that the Government wore principally to blame for appointing a man like the prisoner, who appeared to have no knowledge of accounts, with a small salary os Receiver of Bevenne, when such a large amount as over £26,000 had to pass through his hands. Jndge Biohmond sentenced the prisoner to five years’ penal servitude. NELSON, May 10. Mr A. Adams, M.H.R.. Resigns. Mr Acton Adams, M.H.8., who has been seriously ill for some time, notifies bis resignation. DUNEDIN, May 10. Tram Conductor Committed. The Coroner’s jury, silting to inquire into the circumstances of Garrett's death, returned a verdict of manslangbter against the conductor, who has been committed for trial. Bail allowed himself in £IOO, and two sureties in £SO each. Tararua Inquiry. The wreck inquiry was resumed this afternoon. Mr Denniston repri cents the Customs; Messrs Allan and Holmes the Union Company. The first mate is still under examination. Tbe Last Shift. Christopher Fleming, a miner, hart at Nasoby yesterday, died this morniug.
