Thomas Snnnins, concerned in the Riverhead attempted murder, has been remanded till tho 12th, as the girl, Annie Carlile, is not yet recovered sufficiently to give evidence. Reported Wreck. The brigantine Annie Bow. from Timaru, reports that she could see nothing of the wreck at Little Barrier. The Helena, from Oamaru, reports seeing a vessel apparently ashore on the N.E. corner of the island. A boat leaves Auckland to-night to investigate. SlippedGeorge Rhodes, carpenter, who fell on the asphalts pavement and broke his leg, died in the Hospital. NEW PLYMOUTH, May 6. Beedle’s Brewery. The insurances on Beedlo’s (late Suiter’s) brewery, on the North road are: —National, jgIOOO ; Standard, J 3930; New Zealand, .£IOOO on the building and £6UO on tho contents in the united offices. CriminalThe Supreme Court was opened to-day by Judge Richmond. There are eight cases for trial, being various forms of larceny, two cases of forgery, and one of embezzlement. Wm. Cunningham, for stealing gold chain from Mr Brewer, at Hawera, was found “ Guilty,” and sentenced to eighteen months’ hard labor; James Smith, for forgery, received two years’ imprisonment; John Wills, charged stealing a horse, was acquitted. The jury found true bills against Wilkinson for embezzlement of money from the Government at Hawera. Tho case will be heard on Monday. WELLINGTON, May 6. Chairmanship. The solicitor to tho Education Board has given bis opinion that a member once elected chairman retains that position so long as he continues a member of the Board. NELSON, May 6. Playing with Matches. Two stacks belonging to Mr Coppins, Motneka Hotel, were destroyed by fire to-day. It is supposed that the fire was caused by children playing with matches. Tho hotel was saved with difficulty. TIMARU, May 6. Crops. The agricultural returns for Sontb Canterbury district show that tho estimated yield of wheat was 1,483,249 bushels, of oat i 767,891 bushels ; barley, 157, t 65 bushels. Tho total number of acres under crop wan 312,785. DUNEDIN, May 6. Free and Independent. The “ Bruco Herald ” gives currency to a report that Mr O. S. Beeves will be a probable candidate for Bruce at tho general elections. Disqualified The disqualification of Mr Byers (owner), Byers’ jockey, and tho horso Golden Crown, by tho Auckland R icing Club-, has boen|endorsed by tho Dunedin Jockey Club.
