NEWS OF THE DAY.

Relief,—A correspondent writes that ho is under the impression that there is a balance of the Kuitangata relief fund, available for widows and orphans left destitute by the Tararua disaster. Policb OotJßT.—This morning before J. Ollivier and J. E. Parker, Esqrs., J.P.'s, a man who had been drunk and disorderly (first offence) was fined ss. New Beoadway Market.—Messrs F. B. Lloyd and Oa. are to be congratulated on the success attending their spirited venture. The idea of converting an idle block of land, at the junction of Colombo street south with the South Belt, into a general market was a bold one, and we are informed by the various traders who have started business there that the results of the present week have been satisfactory. The spacious avenue running oast and west through the market has been asphalted! and is brilliantly lit with gas at night. The wants of all appear to have been studied, as vendors of fish, fruit, vegetables, game, groceries, &c., ore there in fall force although the butchering element seems to preponderate. This evening the Railway Band will play the following selection, in the market, beginning at seven o’clock: —Quick march, “ The Empty Cradle” (T. H. Wright); Lancers, “ The American National Guard” (H. Round) ; valse, “The Lucky Stars” (H. Round) ; quick march, “ Over the Garden Wall ” (Linter) ; grand selection from the Opera 11 The Bells of Oomeville,” (R. Pianquotte) ; polka (cornet solo), “Paroquet” (0. Godfrey , Bandmaster Royal Horse Guards) ; grand fantasia on Irish airs, “ Kmira” (Escudie) : quadrille, “Shamrock Leaves" (T. H. Wright) ; valse, “ True Love” (H. Round) ; overture, “ Confidence” (J. Hummell) ; polka (cornet solo), “Cavendish” (Linter); glee, “England’s Merry Bells” (G. Brooks) ; quick march, “ Burnished and Bright” (T. H, Wright) ; contest valse, “ Fury Revels” (H. Round) ; contest quadrille, “ The Wheel of Fortune” (H. Round) • galop, “The Royal Squadron” (Linter); National Anthem. The Late Me Andesw Duncan.—A life-size portrait, in oils, of the late Mr Andrew Duncan, has just been finished, ar.d hangs in the Rooms of the A. & P. Associateo.ll; It is the work of Mr'Oousins, whoso ability as an artist has long been recognised in the European studios as well as in the narrower circle of New Zealand residents. He took it from a photograph ; and it is a remarkably fine likeness, the expression of the face being particularly faithful. Mr Murphy, secretary of the A. & P. Association, desires it to be known that any friends of the departed gentleman are welcome to inspect the picture at hi* offices, Hereford street. Money.—By reference to our London telegrams, it may be seen that consols continue to be quoted at the unusually high figure of 101 J. Lyttelton Peksbytbeian Chcbch.— Special services in connection with the Tararua calamity will be held at this church to morrow, as advertised elsewhere. Masonic Fcnbeal,—A Masonic fuse s] will take place to-morrow at Port in connection with the death of Bro. W. Robinson, Lodge of Unanimity, 601, E.C.

Saw Francisco Maii— The Union ComSany’e s.s. Penguin, with the inward Bim 'ranoisoo and Homo mails, reached Lyttelton from Manukan this morning, just too late for the correspondence to be forwarded by the first train from Port. The Christchurch, portion ,’of the mails reached the city a few minutes after eight o’clock, and was distributed before noon. The Danites. —The company under the management of Mr De Lias, who have recently been performing the American play of “ The Danites, ” will open to-night in the Theatre Eoyal for a short season. The piece is spoken of as a very powerfully written one, and the delineation of American character by Messrs Theo. Hamilton and Higgs is also commended. The other members of the company are tolerably well known to playgoers here. Oatmeal. Messrs Moir and Co., of this city, have obtained the highest award for oatmeal, made at their Sonthbrook mills, which was shown at the Melbourne Exhibition In the telegram of awards given this firm was credited with having obtained an award for pearl barley. This is, howan error, and we are glad to find that the sterling quality of the Canterbury oatmeal holds its own in competition in other colonies. It will be remembered that Moir and Co.’s oatmeal obtained the highest award of merit, also, at the Sydney Exhibition. The Eoslyn Tramway Accident. —The “ Daily Times” states that Thomas Garrett, who was so severely injnred in the Eoslyn tramway accident, died on Thursday night.

A. and P. Association.—The usual monthly meeting of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association was held yesterday at the association rooms, Hereford street, Mr J. E. Hill in the chair. Present—Messrs W. Norman, P. Cunningham, H. Mollraith, B. Sutherland, T. Brnoa, W. Boag, A. W. Money, H. P. Murray-Aynsley, J. Anderson, jnn., and J. Mcßeath. After the consideration of some unimportant correspondence, the draft of the society’s rules was carefully considered, and after several alterations, necessary to make them in harmony with the Agricultural and Pastoral Societies Act, 1877, they were passed, and ordered to be printed in proof, preparatory to being laid before a general meeting of the society, advertised to be held on Monday, the 23rd inst. The quo tion of altering the day of meeting was postponed till next meeting of the general committee. Mr Anderson, jnn , drew attention to the portrait of the late Mr Andrew Dancan, painted by Mr Cousins, and now placed in the rooms of the society. Ihe members present expressed themselves mneb pleased with the painting, and on the motion of Mr Anderson, seconded by Mr Mcßeath, it was decided to give Mr Cousins the order for) the second portr -it, for presentation to Mrs Duncan. After the discussion of some other unimportant matte s, the meeting terminated. Canterbury Eugby Union. -The annual general meeting of the above took place at the Clarendon Hotel last evening. Present —Messrs Anderson, jnn. (in the chair), Million, Hawkes, Parker and Lowin (secretary). The Secretary apologised for not calling the meeting in April, and detailed the club’s action for the past season, stating that a team from Otago would probably visit Canterbury this year, and that a match will have to bo arranged with the Australians; that the question of sending a team to Wellington would also have to ho considered, and that as Auckland intended sending a team round the colony, the olnb had plenty of work before it. Last year eighty-four olnba belonged to the Union, of which the Eastern had collapsed, bat a new clnb, the Eavens, bad been

formed, who had appointed a delegate to the Union. Attention was also called to several of the clubs outside the Union, and also to other playing Eugby Union rules, but not belonging to the Union. The report congratulated the Union on the acquisition of gentlemen who had played half-back in the English team, whilst it was regretted that several of the best men contemplated abandoning the game. Finally, in view of the coming season, the utmost attention to practice was advised. The receipts for the year were stated as J 372 17s 4d; expenditure, X 72 16s 6d; assets, 2315 10s; liabilities, XS. It was decided to write to all clubs whoso subscriptions are in arrears, calling attention to the rule which prohibits their playing in tho_ forthcoming Union matches while their subscriptions remained nnpaid.
