Thfl civU action brought by Government aguintit Whitelaw, relative to Mrs Kettle's (his mother's) salary as matron, which it wag alleged had been received by Whitelaw and not accounted for, has been dropped, Mrs Kettle having signed a document giving a full discharge for the same. Whitelaw stands committed for trial for ill treatment, but to-day obtained the necessary bail, and was liberated. AUCKLAND, May 6. Scholastic Appointment. Mr Williams, late principal of the Swansea Normal College, who arrived here by the ship Sydenham, has been appointed to the vacant mastership of the Doncdiu High School. Political. Mr F. A. Whitaker writes a long letter to the "Waikato Times," replying to Sir George Grey, whom he charges with procuring for the Thames district expenditure on useless reclamation and other works. Overworked Women. It is determined to enforce the provisions of the Employment of Females Act, which hitherto has been a dead letter in Auckland. Mulled Beer. Beedle's (late Suiter's) brewery, on the North road, was totally destroyed by firo at three o'clock this morning. It was bnrned before, about two years ago. The insurance is £2OOO, in various offices. Captain Fairchild, of the Stella, has completed the dredging of the Wangarei harbour, so that vessels of any tonnage can get to Limestone Island to load coal. £S Shipping Puzzle* POET CHALMERS, May 6. Captain McCallum has just received a telegram from the Heads stating that the Peruvian barque Fray Bentos is anchored outside the Heids in six fathoms of water. Pilot Paton is on Board, but the captain will do nothing for him. He will neither shift out nor in for safety. The ship is in danger. Coxswain Milne requests Captain McCallum to communicate with the agents. A signal has been run up from Fray Bentos to the effect that some one has been drowned. [fbom oub own cobeespondekt.] Later. The barque is anchored balf-a-mile outside the Beads, end will be towed in to-night. No disturbance. No drowning.
