EDUCATION BOARD.
The Eduoation Board for the North Canterbury distriot met yesterday at 3 o'clook in the afternoon. There were present— Mr Inglis (chairman), Messrs Peryman, Geo. Booth, Cunningham, Montgomery, and tho Rev. Charles Fraser. The Secretary read a statement of the business done by the chairman since last meeting, which was approved. A deputation from the Papanui school committee waited on the Board in reference to certain alterations being made in the school, with which the committee were not satisfied, and suggested improvement. The Board promised to oonsider the representations of the deputation, and see what could be done in the matter. Subsequently a resolution was passed that the matter be left in the hands of the chairman to arrange. Professor Cook and Professor Bickerton (with Mr Veel) were appointed to prepare the papers for the June Scholarship examinations. In reference to certain resolutions passed by the South Canterbury Board on She subject of secondary education, and submitted to this Board for consideration— It was resolved, on the motion of Mr Cunningham—" That this Board is not prepared to support the resolution No. 3 re secondary education, remitted from the South Canterbury Board." The Board then proceeded to oonsider tenders for work in various districts, and the following were accepted : —West Eyreton, Boyd and Keir, £52 ; Oust, Boyd and Keir, £6O. Plans and specifications of fencing required at the Colombo road school, Sydenham, were laid on the table, and it was resolved that tenders for the work be called for. An application was received for repairs to the Lincoln road school. The Board rosolvod to call for tenders for a portion of the work applied for. Applications wore received for house allowances from the head mistress of East Ohristchurch main school and the second master of tho West Ohristchurch school. Granted. The appointment of Mr T. May to the mastership of the East Oxford school was approved. After disposing of some routine business, Tho Board proceoded to consider the motions given notice of by Mr Cunningham. Mr Cunningham moved—" Seeing that thirty-five pupil teachers failed to pass at their annual examination, steps be taken to examine all pupil teachers half-yearly." The motion was seoondod by Mr Montgomery pro forma. The Chairman read a report by the secretary, which went to show that the proposal made by Mr Cunningham would be undesirable for several reasons. Some discussion ensued, indicating that the feeling of the Board generally was against the proposal. Mr Cunningham ultimately withdrew hia resolution.
The seoond motion given notice of was as follows :—" That the payment of the seeond and fourth quarterly gratuities to teachers in each year shall depend on the successful passing of the respective pupil teachers."
After a brief discussion, Mr Cunningham consented to postpone his resolution. The Rev. Mr Eraser gave notice of motion asjfollows = —" That for the future payment of teaohers for the instruction of pupil teachers shall be partially by results; that one-half of the presert sums shall be paid quarterly, and the payment of the other half shall be contingent upon the pupil teachers passing the annual examination satisfactorily." The Board then went into committoo, and on resuming adjourned.
