ASHBURTON COUNTY COUNCIL.
The usual monthly meeting of the above Council was |held on Wednesday. Present — Messrs Walker (chairman), Bullock, Cameron, E. S. Coster, Saunders, Jackson and Wright. The engineer’s report was road. It stated that the Pudding Hill road and Chapman’s Creek road and well at Winslow were finished. The owners of land in the Mount Somers district were of opinion that two main drains would be necessary if the whole district wore supplied with water. In one place the owners of land had already made a piece of drain, and asked tho Council to extend it. Ho had tested the Rakaia water supply drain, and found tho loss of water by percolation to be for a distance of 22 miles 33 per cent. The Chairman was empowered to accept tenders for planting the margin of tho sale yards. With regard to the reference made to the Mount Somers water supply in (he engineer’s report it was resolved—“ That inasmuch as tho proposed expenditure on tho Mount Somers water race will be at the rate of 9j per acre for the area to be benefltted, if Mr Taylor’s lands is excluded, no expenditure bo incurred on that race until Mr Taylor consents to contribute to the maintenance of the said race in proportion.” It was resolved to sot aside £4OO for a water supply tor the district between South Ashburton river and Bowyer’s stream, the money to be expended when owners of property consented to bo rated for the maintenance of the water-race. It was resolved that fords should be made where tho water-race crosses the public roads. Oa the motion of Mr Wright, it was resolved —“That wherever special crossings are required to supply water to properties on tho opposite side of the read dividing such property, and such crossings are approved by the Council's engineer, two-thirds of the cost be paid by owners of land in proportion to the area of their holdings within half n mile of such road, and that failing their agreement to pay such charge, no diversion in the course of tho race shall be made.” It was resolved to opprove of the engineer’s report re South Rakaia plains water supply, and to call for tenders for carrying out tho work. The Hospital committee’s report was read, and the recommendations in it left in the hands of the chairman to arrange for. Tho expenditure of £l3 or £l4 on tho Hospital was approved. Leave was granted to Mr Walker to withdraw his notice of motion with regard to the management of railways. The report of the committee appointed to report on the amount of money due to tho Borough Council was read. It recommended to givo £SOO to the Borough Council. The report was adopted. Tho sum of £IOO was voted for making a foot-bridge on the River Hinds, in connection with the railway bridge. It was resolved to ask Dr. Trevor to superintend tho Hospital for three months, after the expiration of his present term. The following tenders were accepted for the water race : No. 1 contract, John Dick, 2s 5d per chain ; No. 2, J. Siloock, Is lOd per chain ; No. 3, Y. Yaughan, 1b 5i per chain; No. 4, W. J. Silcock, Is 8d per chain. The Council then adjourned.
