ATTEMPTED BANK BURGLARY AT TAURANGA.
SECOND EDITION.
[PBB PBEBB ASSOCIATION.! WELLINGTON, May 4. Mr Buchanan, Inspector of the National Bank here, has received the following telegram from Tauranga :—" Bank attacked last night by burglars. One caught, after severe struggle, by Sergeant White and Constable Whel«n. Others escaped. No damage done." Sergeant White states that Mr Morris, the manager of the Bank, informed him, about a week ago, that he suspected someone wou'd try to injure him, and most likely rob the Bank, as auspicious parties were prowlirg about, aud clogging bis steps from the Olub tu the Bank at night. Upon this information Sergeant White kept a vigilant watch on the Bank. As he was stationed inside the Bank
a rap came to the door. The manager of the Bank opened tne door, and a large quantity of pepper was thrown in his face, completely blinding him, at the same time the robber caught the manager by the throat. Constable Whelan wai stationed behind the door. He, along with the manager, was suffering severely from the pepper, bat struck the robber on the head. Sergeant White covered him with his revolver, and the prisoner caved »n after a severe struggle. The prisoner's name is William Heury Bjrfield. Upon his being searched the following articlei were found :—A knotted bludgeon, a gag, & piece of rope, a niece of soap, a quantity of pepper, and a towel. Prisoner had blackened his faceImmediately after he was Becured, Sergeant White rushed out of the Bunk to eee if he could find any accorrp'.icfs. Ha saw no °" e > Du t picked up a loaded pistol outsido the door. It i 8 snpposed that there is a gang in (own, as Mr Morris saw one or two men outside the door.
