STABBING A GIRL FOR LOVE.

[PEESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.! AUCKLAND, Apr 11 29. A sailor at Bivcrhead stabbed a young girl, agad about nineteen years, of prepossessing appearance, who had been cn a visit at that plane. Two railway porters and a stoker stai.td off in pursuit of the would-be murderer. They found him at a bouse giving the girl, whom be had a few hours before attempted to deprive of life, some milk with a spoon. Upon being informed of the mission of hia visitors, he immediately yielded himself up. One of them remarking that bo had no handcuffs, nor anything to bind him with, he said, “ Oh ! I will go quietly with you, you need be under no apprehension on that account,” and he kept his word. He was brought tj the station, and, after being searched, was allowed to go at liberty, which was not takon advantage of, for ho walked up and down the platform for severe I hours, apparently quite unconcerned. While being searched by Mr Wanghton, a penfcn :f e was found on him. Upon observing it, accuse 1 said, “That’s not the knife I done it with; Bradley has it.” When arrested he confessed to having committed the deed, saying, “ I stabbed the girl through love. Boss incensed me to do it.” A reasonable inference from these words is, that ho and Boss were rival suitors. Possibly thinking Ross the more favored, and prompted by jealousy, the man madly w.r ikei his vengeance on the object of his affections, which was no sooner done than he repented, for ho was found quiet, mild, and submissive, feeding her as one wonld a baby. He further remarked “ I know I shall bo hanged if the girl dies.” She was stabbed twice, and her condition is considered very serious.
