SYDENHAM HORTICULTUAL SOCIETY.

The first effort in connection with this newly inaugurated society—and that a very successful one—was made last evening, when a show of chrysanthemums was held in St. Mary’s schoolroom, Addington. Tho blooms exhibited, to which prizes were awarded of certificates of merit, were excellent. Messrs Forsyth and Nairn had their stands of blooms which were exhibited at the Christchurch show, and these helped considerably to enliven and improve the exhibition. Amongst what may bo called tho more strictly local exhibits, those of Messrs Line, Hepworth, G. Green, Jackson and Cooper were worthy of praise, being wellgrown and of good color. Several stands for exhibit only were worthy of notice. Messrs Nairn and Sons had a very fine collection of out blooms, including water lily, delphinium, begnonias, &c. On the staging were also shown some good plants of begonias, colens, and fuchsias, and Mr Leigh had a very fine exhibit of a now kidney potato, the Ruby, an American sort, which is spoken of very highly. As a whole the society is to be congratulated upon the success of their first exhibition, and it is to be hoped that they will continue to improve and grow.

At the close of the chrysanthemum show a business meeting of members was held, W. Pratt, Esq., vice-president, in the chair. Rule 10—classification of exhibits— was considered, and after discussion it was resolved, on the motion of Mr Manning,—That there be three classes at the society’s exhibitions, viz , A, B and C, the committee to exercise great care in defining the exhibits in each class, such definition to be contained in the schedule of the Society’s Show for the year ; class O to be purely a cottagers’ class.” Several new members were admitted. A vote of thanks to the chairman concluded the meeting.
