CHRISTCHURCH. Wednesday, April 27. Josiah Birch, Esq , J.P.] Drunkenness. —Mary Gough, an inveterate drunkard, was sentenced to three months 1 imprisonment with hard labor. Mary Ann White was fined ss. Joseph Hawthorne, for being drunk and using obscene language, waa fined 20s, and 2s cab hire. David Alexander, who had been in Lyttelton gaol for medical treatment, was now brought up cured, admonished, and discharged. I Before J. Nugent Wood, Esq., E.M.] Vagrancy. —John Hinks, alias Orawley, alias Hicks, pleaded guilty to not having any lawful visible means of support. Sergeant Wilson stated that on the evening of the 19th prisoner gave himself up at the police depot, saying ho had no means of subsistence. His Worship said ho thought it a shame fora man of prisoner’s appearance to be loafing about on public charity. Ho would be sentenced to three months' imprisonment with hard labor. Failing to Provide. —John Dalton was charged with not having provided for the support of his illegitimate child. Mr Holmes appeared for the prosecution ; Mr Longhrey for defendant. Prosecutrix deposed that about seven years ago she, being then fourteen years of age, was a servant in the house of the father of defendant. An intimacy began between the parties, which resulted in the birth of a child. Prosecutrix took legal proceedings against him; ho then cleared out, and a warrant was issued for his arrest, but the warrant could not be executed until a short time ago. Defendant never contributed to the support of the child. Ho was now possessed of considerable means. Defendant denied the allegation of improper intimacy, and said he had at present no property. Mr Holmes cross-examined defendant and a witness of bis at considerable length. The Bench said they thought the case bad been fully proved. The child had bean in the Industrial School at Burnham since March 15th, 1875. This case was brought in consequence of the mother having been sued for its maintenance there, and the father had now been produced and must certainly pay. Defendant would be ordered to pay to the Industrial fcchool arrears at the rate of 6s per week from March sth, 1875, up to the present time, and further payments at the same rate until a period of fourteen years from the child’s admission had elapsed. Solicitor's fee, £3 3s, was allowed, together with expenses of two witnesses, £1 ss.

An application was made for a temporary transfer of license of the Garrick Hotel from Morling to Dovery, Mr Stringer said he believed this application had been so repbrted on by tho police, in oon« sequence of a complaint which had been made about the house, that there might be some difficulty in dealing with the application. In the intercuts of Mr Dovery, he would like to put a man named Puller in the box This man had informed the police that he had lost a large sum of money in the Garrick, of which house Mr Devery was now proprietor. The man named was then examined ; he said he hod lost money, and since found it in another house whore he had been after leaving the Garrick. The transfer was then granted.
