SYDENHAM BOROUGH COUNCIL.

A special meeting of this Council was held at seven o'clock last evening, for the purpose of signing and certifying to the burgess roll for 1882. The Town Clerk having reported that no objections had been lodged against it, the roll was duly signed, and the seal of the borough affixed thereto. The usual fortnightly meeting was then held. Present—The Mayor, Orfl. Andrew, Hall, Nicholl, Joyce, White, Pavitt, Nioholls and Day. Cr. Androw moved the suspension of the Standing Orders of the Council to allow the following resolution to be considered : —" That this Council as a body wait upon the City Oouncil to arrange for the commencement of the formation and part channelling of the South Town belt."

Cr. Nioholls seconded the motion, and after discussion it was resolved to despatch the business of the evening as quickly as possible for that purpose. A letter was read from the South Waimakariri Board of Conservators, enclosing copy of resolutions passed at a recent meeting of that body re the levying and collecting of rates of the local bodies within the boundaries of that Board's district, advising that it would not be necessary to deliver rolls to that body as hitherto. The Town Clerk was ordered to reply to the communication. Mr Scrader wrote asking when the Counoil would receive a deputation of ratepayers re the South Belt footpaths and channelling ; also, calling attention to the need of a lamp at Wilson's bridge. Kesolved that the deputation be received at the next meeting of the Council.

A requisition from Mr J. B. Nisbett and twenty-nix others, asking that a public meeting be held to hear the views of the candidates for municipal honours, was next considered, and it was resolved that a public meeting be held on Friday next, at 8 o'olock, for that purpose, in the Colombo road schoolroom.

Certain residents in a street near Falsgrave street wrote asking that it may be formed and metalled on the usual conditions. After some discussion, the matter was referred to the works committee.

A letter was read from Messrs J. M. Heywood and Co. asking that a lamp be erected at the corner of First and Hawdon streets, adjoining their stables, they agreeing to provide the lamp if the Council would bear the cost of connection and lighting. Referred to the lighting committee. The works committee reported that tenders had been invited for repairing and shingling the streets of Sandridge ; also, advising that the tender of Mr A. M. Davidson for horse teams till March 31»t, 1882, had been accepted ; also, thot instructions had been given to level the Addington Recreation Reserve and sow grass seed thereon. The report was received and adopted. The finanoe committee reported that the receipts for the past fortnight were £93 2s 3dj expenditure £l3B Oj lid; present Bank balance £970 03 lid. The junior clerk having applied for an increase of salary, it was recommended that it be increased 2a 63 per week. The advice of the Council's solicitors respecting its claim to a proportion of the land fund wrongfully paid to the Spreydon Road Board was attached to the report. The report was adopted, and the clerk instructed to again communicate with Spreydon on the matter. On the motion of Cr. Joyce, seconded by Or. Andrew, the following resolutions were agreed to—" That a letter be sent to the Chief Postmaster, asking that he allow the residents in Queen street permission to use a right-of-way alongside the post-office into Colombo road during postal hours." " That a letter be sent to the Chief Postmaster, asking that the Sydenham Post Office Bavings Bank bo opened on the Saturday evenings in May and Juno as an experiment." This being all the business, the Council adjourned in a body to interview the City Council on the South belt question.
