LYTTELTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The usual meeting of this Council was held on Monday night. Present—The Mayor, and Crs. Macdonald, Grubb, Smith, Garforth, Webb, Macpherson, and Weyburne. The receipts since the preceding meeting were £l4l Ms. The siding at [Officer's Point was the first matter taken up, the Mayor stating that he had done his best to have it settled both by lotter and telegram, but so far he had not succeeded in getting the cost of the siding. He would communicate direct with the Minister, and in the meantime the estates committee oould not report. In connection with the section next to the Union Bank of Australia, for the use. of a public pound, consent had been given, but so many complaints had been made that the works committee declined to take action at present. A more suitable site, it was thought, must be found for this purpose before any expense is incurred. On the motion of Or. Garforth, it was resolved to write to the Church Property Trustees, asking if a piece of their ground in Dampier Bay could be obtained for pound purposes. Dr. House sent in his usual report of patients he had attended during March. Nineteen ratepayers wrote, asking for a lamp near Mr Cunningham's property, on the Bridle path. The request was left for the lighting committee to deal with. Mr J. Duulop wanted a refund of 6s Si on water rate paid a year or so ago. His neighbors had not been charged, so [the amount was, on the motion of Cr. Smith, remitted. Accounts amounting to £l4B 4a 7d were passed for payment. Mr Kent, engineer at the town's waterworks, forwarded his usual report. Mr Ohas. Clark's letter for information of assistance to him in making up a map of the borough property was read, and the town clerk was instructed to send whatever information he could. The halfyearly and yearly balance-sheets to March 31st, the end of the fiscal year, were approved. Or. McPherson remarked that the state of the town's finances this year had very much improved. Last year the town had overdrawn upwards of £6OO. This year there was a ballance of £ll4 to the credit of the Borough account. The Mayor reported that but one tender had been received, that of Mr Geo. Mackay, for charitable aid supplies. It was accepted. The committee on pedlers' and hawkers' licenses reported that the law had not been brought into operation in the neighboring towns, and they, therefore, recommended that the matter be left in abeyance. Cr. Grubb moved a resolution—" That the Mayor, and Crs. Smith and Webb, and the mover be a commit tee to report upon a proposed alteration in the building by-law." Agreed to. Leave of absence was granted to Or. Seed.
