■.3? SOMETHING ABOUT BELLS. The history of bells (says the " Buoks Advertiser ") is one of the most interesting in the record of inventions. They were firat heard of about the year 400, before which date rattles were used. In the year 610 we hear of bells in the city of Bens, the army of Olothaire, King of Franoe, having been frightened away by the ringing of them. In 960 the first peal of bells was hung in England, at Ooyland Abbey. Many years ago it was estimated that there at least wore 2262 peals of bells, great and small, in England. It has been thought that the custom of ringing bells was peculiar in England ; but, in fact, the cathedral of Antwerp, celebrated for its magnificent spire, has a peal of bells, 90 in number, on which is played overy half-hour the most elaborate music It is an interesting fact that the peal of bells in the tower of the old Royal Ex change was chiming " There's na luck aboot the house " when the building was on fire. It would require 91 years to ring all the I changes on a peal of 12 bells, supposing 10 ohanges—that is, 120 sounds—to be struck every minute. For the ohanges of 14 bells 16 575 years would be required, and for 24 bells 117,000,000,000,000,000.
