The report of the Australian Mutual Provident Society for the past year has been issued. It shows that 9623 proposals for life assurance were submitted during the year, 6551 being accepted, assuring £2,181,258. New premiums amount to £74,666. Claims have arisen on 261 policies, amounting to £111,413. Tho accumulated funds of tho society now amount to £3,379,510, being an increase of £445,713, compared with the previous year. SYDNEY, April 20. Sydney Races. Tho raco for the Sydney Gold Cup and 500 sovs., with a sweepstako of 20 sovs.; distance two miles, was run to-day. Sixteen horses started. The race was won by Mr Branch's Progress, Strathearn second, and Wandering Jew third. A good start was effected. Richmond, Orient, and Hesperian got well to the front, but were soon joined by Canary, who waited closely upon them. Hesperian led round the turn, followed by Black Swan, Orient, Major, Templar, The Pontiff, Gunild, and the The Barber, Richmond, Strathearn, and Cynic. The last round was run in the same order until nearing the trainer's stand, where Progress improved his position, and came away through the crowd, winning easily by four lengths in front of Strathearn, who also made his way rapidly through the horses at the finish. Wandering Jew made a good third, half-a-length behind Strathearn, but only beating Richmond at the winning post by a head. Wellington followed closely and finished a good fifth at the Jew's girth, with Braidwood, The Pontiff, Gunild, Hesperian, and Major, Templar close behind. Time, 3min 36 8-10 sec.
