THE SCULLING CHAMPIONSHIP.

Referring to the recent matches for the championship of the world, the “Anglo-Aus-tralianin London” writes: “To the uninitiated it will doubtless appear strange that while Triokett rowed the course with Sadler m 24 minutes 36 seconds, it took Honlan 26 minutes 12 seconds to row it in the encounter with Triokett, and 25 minutes 41 seconds in the race with Laycock, so that while Hanlon has proved victorious over Triokett and Laycock he has not beaten Triokett’s time in his match with Sadler in July, 1876, Whether adverse winds, or lumpy water, or deterioration of power, or the build of the boat can bo charged with this disparity as to time, experts in such matters may perhaps bo able to explain, but for myself I must candidly confess that—judging by what Triokett did with Sadler, and naturally adding something to his account on the score of increased experience—when I hoard of his match with Hanlan I looked upon him as a certain winner. It will be some satisfaction, however, to the losers to know that they have svoceoded in raising the standard of sculling in this country, and that wo shall soon hear something more of the relative merits of short and long slides, and of windsails to steady the boat and steering-gear. There are some who think that Laycock was hampered by his steering-gear, and that if ho had adopted a windsail ho would have altered the complexion of the race. It has been the boast of Englishmen that no sculler out of England could compete with them.”
