McDonald’s Paramena, 7st 81b ... 3 Dan, Lonehnnd and Miaa Domett were scratched. Betting—6 to 1 Maid of Honor and Paramens. After a good deal of coquetting at tho post the horses were despatched to an excellent start. On going round the bend of the course Paramena ran into first place, hotly followed by Ratcatcher, while Maid of Honor led tho rest, which followed in a ruck. At the back of the course Wilmott called on the mare, and in response she went up on the quarters of the leaders and raced them, and at the three-quarter-mile post she was on even terms with them. In turning into the cutting Paramena led, but it was easily perceived that bis retention of his position was only temporary. In commencing to run home ho stumbled, and Ratcatcher at once shot to the front. Maid of Honor then came away in slashing style, taking the lend from Mr Leonard’s gelding, and won a grand race by a length. Time, Imin. 51]seo. Ellbbblib Handicap, of 100 bovb. Mr Owen’s Sir George, Bst 101 b 1 Mr Leonard’s Kenilworth. 7st 81b 2 Major George’s Tenambra. 6st 3 Tim Whiffler, Miss Domett, Eowena and Slander Filly also started. Rifleman was scratched.
Betting—G to 4on Sir George. The stort was a bad one, Sir George securing the full advantage of it, and Kenilworth and Tenambra also participating to some extent in this accidental good fortune. The interest centred in the contest between these two animals for second honors, for it was easily seen that the leader was not likely to be displaced. Kenilworth and Tenambra ran neck and neck from the start till the turn for home, when Holmes allowed them to get on terms with him. At this place Rowona fell, but her rider, though thrown over her head, escaped unhurt. Sir George won in a canter. The Slander Filly mode a good fourth. Time, Imin. 20isecs. Hurdle Race Handicap of 50 sovs.; distance 2i miles; over nine flights of hurdles. Mr W. Douglas’ Harkaway, lOst 81bs ... 1 Mr J. Ellis’s Lonehand, 12st 71bs ... ... 2 Mr R. W. Wheeler's Morning Star, lOst ... 3 Whnkahihi did not show up at the post. The horses got away on good terms. After the first few score of yards had been travelled, Morning Star came away with a rush, and led the field over the first hurdle, Whitefoot, Lonehand and Harkaway being in close attendance. The second hurdle was safely negotiated with no change of their relative position, and the third was also taken in the same order. Through sustaining severe damage from the hoofs of some of the racers in approaching the stand, Whitefoot dropped behind, and then the leaders drew closer together. At the back of the course Lonehand began to go up on Harkaway, who from the stand had got second place, while both of them began to make the pace hot for Morning Star. A neck and neck race ensued, and then os the straight was entered upon the three were together. Morning Star yielded up his position, and Harkaway and Lonehand raced grandly for it, the former winning by a head. Morning Star being only a length behind him. Time, 4min 49seo. Easter Handicap of 100 sovs. Distance, two miles. Mr Horsfall’s King Quail, 7st 51b ... ... 1 Mr McDonald’s Foul Play, 9st 51b 2 Mr Douglas’s Rawenta, 6st 3 Matsu, Tim Whifller. This was from start to finish a splendid race, and every one of the starters were well in it. Dan obtained the benefit of the start, with Ariel and Foul Play close up. The position changed several times, and when the grand stand was passed for the first time the six horses were close together. At the back of the course it was the same. Sir George then put on a spurt, and looked a likely winner, but King Quail soon disposed of him and took the lead, whence ho was raced up the straight by Rawenta and Foul Flay and finished fourth. Dan threw his rider, but no injury was sustained. Novel Handicap, of SOaova. Mr McGee’s b g Skylark, 7st 21b 1 Mr J. C. Mill’s b g Diver, 7st 2 Magician was scratched. Only three started.
