THE BUNDOORA SHIPMENT.
[By Sikbad.] I called In recently at Messrs Ford and Newton’s to have a look at the six representatives of the Bundoora paddocks, to be offered for sale to-morrow morning, and was much pleased with most of them. Old Ike was again in charge of them, and was as usual most obliging. He is a perfect Nestor of the turf, having been in the Zetland stable when the famous Voltigenr was defeated in the great match with the still more famous Flying Dutchman. But to come to the youngsters. They were most of them in fairish condition, which is, perhaps, better than being mud fat, which some breeders think is the acme of show condition. When not too gross, not only is it easier to note their points, but trainers who have the care of them afterwards are saved much trouble in getting off the mountains of fat the two bountiful breeder has over-laid them with. The six youngsters ore all by Tubal Gain, and, like the three of Messrs Mason and Vallance by the same horse, resemble their sire in color, being whole browns. The filly out of Promise is a compact little lady, but rather too much on the small side. She has the appearance of never furnishing into a well-grown mare, and I was glad to pass on to the Fortress filly, a very powerful dark brown, showing heaps of quality, as, indeed, might have been expected from her breeding. Citadel, the sire of Fortress, is by Stock well, out of Sortie, who, in turn, is by Melbourne. Gemma, her dam, was a French bred mare, her sire, Womersley, being by Birdcatoher, out of Cinizelli (dam of the Marquis, Marchioness, The Peer, and Towton). This filly I like in every way the best, for, apart from her breeding, she looks like racing all over. I hope if any of the lot have to return, she will not be one. The Sunbeam filly is not one of the big sort, but shows, as indeed do most of the Tubal Cains, a lot of quality. She is descended from Croupier, an English horse I recollect well in South Australia, and who, I think, was the sire of Cupbearer, who was one of the beat long-distance horses that ever ran in Adelaide. The Crumbs filly is the sister of one of those sold last year. She is a great improvement in appearance on her older sister, as she ia a rare backed one, and is strongly built all over. She is an uncommonly nicely bred one too, Crumbs her dam being by Maribyrnong, out of Sweetbread, who was by the Flying Pieman (imp.) by the Flying Dutchman, out of Equation, dam of Diophantus, winner of the Two Thousand. Maribyrnong, it is almost needless to say, was by Fisherman, out of Bose do Florence, The Pauline filly is a very speedy looking young lady, and is full sister to Ooriolanus the first and only one of Tubal Cain’s progeny that has appeared in public. His debut was a very good one for, when only half fit, ho ran very forward in the Maribyrnong Plato. This filly looks, as I said above, to be likely to make a fast one, and as her dam Paulino it by Panic she should make a slayer too. There is only one colt in the lot, and he will be looked upon by a Christchurch audience with more interest. He is by Tubal Cain out of the handsome Calumny, who he resembles a good bit about the heed, having the white blaze on the forehead peculiar to Traducers, and which has so often in the the case of Calumny gladdened the hearts of her backers, as it was seen shooting out of the ruck coming to the finish of a big race. He is a rare nice looking colt with good flat bone and big hooks and knees, long arms and short cannon bones. I hope ho will find a purchaser to-morrow, and I think whoever he may bo knocked to will never regret his bargain. I remind purchasers that on account of it being a race day, the sale will commence shortly after nine.
