THE OAMARU DEMONSTRATION.
[PBESS ASSOCIATION TBLBQBAM.] OAMARU, April 16. The Volunteer Easter demonstration has so far been a decided success. From Thursday night until the present time Volunteers have been arriving in Oamaru from different parts of the South Island, and have found the accommodation provided for them and the catering almost faultless. Visiting Volunteers have expressed themselves well satisfied with the arrangements made by Major Sumpter and hie officers for their comfort. The number of Volunteers is perhaps about 1000, although the exact number will not be known till to-morrow. The big gun competition was not concluded, owing to the Howitzer batteries not being supplied with ammunition through an oversight. At the racecourse to-day a programme of military and other sports was to have been gone through, but owing to a want of system only the gun competition (which was won by Oamaru), tilting at the ring, and a foot race were contested. The corps had to march about four miles out of town to reach the reserve. To-night a band contest takes place, and for this there are six bands that will probably compete. On Monday review exercises and a sham fight will take place, and this will conclude the demonstration.
