Judge—Mr W. Bishop. Starter —Mr Cradock. JETandicappors—Messrs H. Maddison, J. MoKellar, and W. Spring. Stewards— Messrs R. Frankish, I). Kollahan, W. G. Lunn, G. McClure, J. O. Smithson, Dr, Malone, W. Qabbie, S. Lemon, C. Lewis, Nicholson, W. Woodman. Hon. Treasurer—Mr E. G. Stavoley. Favored with beautiful weather, a good attendance, and capital fields for racing the Ellesmere stewards have every reason to be satisfied with tho result of their meeting, on Thursday, which was decidedly the best over held in Ellesmere. Tho handicaps were well contested, and tho finishes must hove been very satisfactory to the throe gentlemen—Messrs Spring, Maddison and McKollar—who apportioned the weights. That most enthusiastic sportsman, Mr Bishop, acted as judge. As usual, Mr Frankish was effective as olork of the course, while Mr Craddock wielded the starter’s flag with much success. 'The arrangements wore very good, and the secretary, Mr Jameson, is to ho congrotulated on them, Mr Emms, the clerk of tho scales, filled that thonkleea position with great credit. Mr Le Suer was present with his totalisator, and gave every satisfaction. Mr Spring was tho caterer of the day, and provided everything first-class for tho visitors to tho course. The Tasmanian, Albion, commenced proceedings by winning tho Dhtriot Hurdle Race from three others. A field of eight saddled up for tho Open Hurdle Race, which was one of tho best events of tho day. Shark was a strong favourite, but Winfield, better known as Thilo, just boat tho favourite on the post, after a splendid race. The- pace was very fast throughout. Blue Gum fell, breaking his back, at the last hurdle, his rider, Angus, breaking his ocllar-bono. Tho Maiden Plato resulted in a fiasco. Only two started, and one was a bolter. Tho Publicans’ Purse was a gift to Albion, who, with more condition, seems likely to make a very useful horse. His only opponents wore the two competitors in tho Maiden Plate. A field of seven saddled up for tho Cup, tho only absentee being Blue Gum, who had to be destroyed. Fugitive made the running to the last turn, closely waited on by Romeo. Clifford, however, who, in pursuance of his usual tactics, had bean waiting behind, now came up, and easily Battling the pretensions of tho two leaders, won very comfortably, with a good bit up his sleeve, from Fugitive. Albion scoured his third victory of the day in tho Farmers’ Purse, when he had little difficulty in lowering tho colours of his only opponent, Lady Caledon. Details appended. Coming to tho stand the first time Shark, Raven and Stella wore in the front, Winfield fourth, Johnny bringing up the rear, and evidently already outpaced. They ran to about half a mile, from whence Lyford brought Winfield up to tho leaders, and led over the last fence. Blue Gum, who was well with them, fell and broke hie back. It was a good race up the rest of tho straight between Shark and Winfield, both being ridden the whole way, but old Shark compounded in the last few yards, and Winfield won by about a length. The two first-named led all the way to tho last turn, when Coldstream, who came up very fast coming in the last half mile challenged Fugitive, who was tiring rather towards the finish, and running her down very easily, won comfortably by two lengths. Romeo, who ran a very good colt, was a fair third, the rest being outpaced. Farmers’ Plate, of 16 sovs. Weight for ago. Tho winner of the Cup to carry 71b extra, li miles. Mr C.
