The steamship Durham, here a few monthß ago, it is said, will be despatched to this port direct from London, abont the 17th of this month, consigned to Messrs Dalgety and Co. THE STEAMSHIP NIZAM IN PERIL. The P. and O. Company's steamship Nizim, which left Southampton on February 9th for Bombay and China, has tad a narrow eecape from destruction in a violent gale which she encountered shortly after leaving port. On the day following hor departure the gale increased to a hurricane, and the vessel was put half aneed in the terrific cross sea that was running. The steamer frequently shipped large quantities of water, which penetrated to the stokehole, and about eleven o'clock at night a tremendous wavo carried fix sheep overboard, ripped the indiarubber off the steam-pipes, and entered the engine-room. On Friday morning a great sea struck the vessel on the 3tarbonrd side, smashing the captain's gig, bulwarks, gangway, and destroying the steering gear and saloon skylight. The weather underwent no improvement during the whole of Friday. Sea after sea continued to break over the vessel. Some of the plates over the engines were ripped off, and the water got below in largo qumtitie3. The nerilous position was aggravated by the refusal of the Lascars to work, on the plea of exhaustion, so that the stewards and cooks had to take relays at the pumps. About noon it was discovered that the ship was drifting on to the coast off Ushant. Two of the fires were quite extinguished, and the others could only with difficulty be kept in, owing to the dampness of the coals. A flag was observed waving from the Ushant lighthouse, warning Ciiptain Broday of his danger, and for tome timo the loss of the steamer and of all on board was regarded as almost inevitable, for with the awful sea then rolling no boats could possibly have lived. But by the heroic exertions of the captain and the English portion of the ciew, with the combined aid of steam and saila, the Bteimwwaa extricated from her perilous position, and her course directed to Plj mouth, where she arrived on Saturday last. Iter defects were rapidly repaired, and on Sunday night ate started again for Gibraltar. There ore sixty passengers on board, and while at Plymouth they spoke in tho highest terms of thecemmander's beuring. He kept on the bridge for a period of seventy-two hours, nor, even leaving it to take his meals. SHIPPING TELEGRAMS. Pout Chalmers, April 13. Arrived —Rotomahana and Wakatipu, from the North.
