KATAPOI BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The fortnightly meeting was held on Tuesday evening. Present—The Mayor (Mr Blackwell), Ors. Pinching, Woodford, Smith, Mathews, and Frasor. Leave of absence was granted to Crs. Monk and Stanton. Letters were read—From superintendent of police, stating he was unable to detail a night policeman for the town. From the Colonial Secretary, stating the Council's letter relative to bridge repairs had been handed to Minister of Works. From Eyreton Road Board, stating the Board had fulfilled its part of the agreement between the Board and the Council, relative to drainage, also that works had been carried out at Sneyd's corner, which would prevent the river overflowing as it did in '79. The surveyor's report was read. The sidechannels of Peraki street had been cleaned, and porsons owning crossings had been served with notices to keep same in repair. The footpath embankment in Charles street had been shingled. The contractor for metalling Charles street had done his work well. A footpath from the bridge in the railway was being formed, and the surveyor recommended the adoption of a wooden kerbing costing £22. The cost of concrete kerbing and channelling for Peraki street would be £8 per chain, with wooden kerbing £6 5s ; total for 27 chainß, £216, or £IOB 15s. He recommended that the east side be done with timber kerbing, and stones deposited in the channel, costing £96, the timber and stones to be contracted for, and the work done by day labor. He advised tho erection of a lamp at the junction of Hilton and Black streets. The toll-house fencing required repairs. The main drain at the east end of the town ought to he cleared at a cost of £l2. The question of kerbing the north rood footpath and Peraki street, and consideration of letter from Eyreton Board, were deferred. It was decided to repair the fence and clear the drain. The statement of accounts showed £3B 14s lOd in hand. Accounts, £69 8s lOd, were passed. The Council went into committee to consider the
' mittcr of tho rent of the Ashburton reaeryea. It was decided to obtain a report on the condition of the bridge before next meeting. It was resolved—" That Mr Henry be allowed to m ilto an apparatus to open the floodgate of hia drain." On motion of Or. Smith, soconded by Or. Pinching, it was decided to obtain an Orion lamp for the centre of the etreet. It was decided to place a lamp at comer of Hilton and Black Btreets. The Council then adjourned.
