BOARD OF CONSERVATORS.

The monthly meeting of the Waimakariri Board of Conservators was held on Tuesday. Present—Messrs J. L. Vtilsou (chairman), Peryman, Jones, Atkinson, England, and Beag. The monthly report from the overseer was road. It stated that the condition of the river was unchanged, and recommended that groin 7a should be extended for 2i- chains, as the stream was inclined to come into the angle of No. 7 embankment. The work would cost about £250. Mr Jones moved—” That the works committee be requested to visit and inspect the embankment referred to, with power to act in the matter.”

Mr Boag seconded the motion, which was carried.

The works committee reported that they had placed the reserves of the Board by auction, at a rental of £lO4l 8s 9d per annum. Mr Jones, the chairman of the finance com mittee, stated that the accounts as to the rates were not yet to hand from the local bodies. Accounts amounting to .£l2 2s Sdwere passed for payment. The credit balance at the Bank was stated as £toß lls 2d.

The chairman of the finance committee stated that £350 had been paid in error to the I'ublic Works account.

The question of the survey of the reserves and the completion of the leases was referred to the works committee. A letter was read from Mr Jabez Lord, Halkett, who had purchased the lease of lot 48 of the reserves, stating that there was a man already in possession of the lot, who refused to give up possession until April 30th, on the ground that he had paid rent up to that date to Mr G. Turner, steward of reserves. Mr Jones said that it came to this that the steward of reserves must refund the rent received to the Board. It was resolved—” That the secretary write to the steward of reserves, asking for the refund of rent on lot 48 of the reserves, from the time the Crown grant was granted.” Mr Boag seconded the motion, which was agreed to. It was resolved—“ That the account in the Post office Savings Bank as to interest, he transferred to the name of the present chairman of the Board.” Mr Jones moved —“ That a rate ho made, levied, and collected by the said local bodies within the district of the Waimakariri Board of Conservators, for the said Waimakariri Board of Conservators, of Id in the £ for special and Id in the £ for general purposes, due and payable on 30th April.” Mr Boag asked what amount had been collected last year. The Chairman stated that the amount was £3115 3s 2d for the past year. Mr Peryman seconded the motion of Mr Jones. Mr Peryman moved—” That the abstract of the balance sheet as laid before the Board he handed to the Press for publication.” Mr Atkinson seconded the motion, which was agreed to. Iha balance sheet as presented was as follows Revenue —To proceeds of debentures £7000; to proceeds of rates, £3415 Is 2d ; to Government grants, £1583 Its; other sources, £139 10a. Total, £12,143 4s 2d. Expenditube—By balance, £723 0s 7d ; contracts, £l9B 10s 2d ; debentures, paid off, £4650; labour, £lOl7 15s 4d; materials, carting, &c„ £1126 12s 8d; general expenses, £748 4s 7d ; interest on debentures and bank interest. £2412 2s 3d ; honorariums, £ll3 6s Bd. Salaries —Engineers, surveyor, and overseer, £2BO 16s lOd ; sundries, £10; balance, £532 15s Id ; total, £12,143 4s 2d. It was resolved that the Board did not require

rolls from local bodies, as clause 20 of the Canterbury Rivers Act provided that the local bodies had to make levy and collect the rates on requisition of the Board. Mr deal, the overseer, waited on the Board and gave information with regard to the No. 7a embankment. It was resolved that the works committee visit the spot and report upon the work proposed to be done. The proposed standing orders wore road by the chairman and adopted by the Board on the motion of Mr Peryman. After the transaction of soma further routine business, tbo Board adjourned.
