Joseph Hill, residing at the Commercial Hotel, accidentally took a poisonous lotion instead of medicine. A doctor was called in, and by prompt measures averted serious coneequenoes. Alleged Libel. At the Police Court to-day, W. L. Bees, solicitor, Gisborne, formerly M.H.8., commenced a serieß of criminal prosecutions for libel against J. D. Wiokham, of the " Free) Lance." Tbe defendant asked for an adjournment, which was granted till Thursday. Bravo! Two young children, who fell from different wharves in Auckland harbor on Saturday, were rescued by bystanders jumping in. South. British Insurance. The half-yearly meeting of the South British Insurance Company was held to-day. The report showed an income from fire and marine premiums of £65,872; from interest and transfer of fees, £5185. Total, £71,057. This added to £11,971 brought forward from the previous half-year, makesan aggregate total of £83,029. The total expenditure has been— From fire and marine losses paid and outstanding at the close of the books, £32,830 ; re-insurance, £14,288 ; agents' commissions, salaries, rents, &c, £13.461 ; advertising, printing, stationery, £794; Underwriter** Association and fir > brigadi s, £597 ; Govern* ment licenses, £424; making £62,396, together with £SOOO dividend paid, leaving a balance of £15,633 at the credit of profit and loss accounts, from whioh the directors recommend payments of a dividend of 10 per cent., dividend to be payable at the head office of the company on April 12th, and at the branches on receipt of advices. WELLINGTON, April 11. An Alleged Forger. A man named George Saddlier arrived here by the steamer Botomabana yesterday, from Sydney, under warant for committing forgery in Christchurch. The prisoner will be forwarded on to-day. A Distinguished Visitor. The Duke of Manchester was a passenger by the Wakatipu to Wellington, and was the guest of the Governor last night. He visits various parts of the colony, and it is believed will proceed South to-day. TheatricalA theatrical company to support Garden arrived yesterday—a portion from Auckland, and others by the Wakatipu from Sydney. They proceed South to-day. De Lias' Dramatic Company open here on Saturday. Criminal SessionsThe criminal sessions of the Supreme Court opened this morning. The Chief Justice remarked on the lightness of the calendar. He referred to the indictment against Downes for alleged tampering with law stamps, and said the Government in their eagerness to introduce a system of collecting revenue by stamps, had adopted a system which would probably lead to fraud. Chas. Collins (perjury), and Louis Miohalier (larceny), were acquitted; Jas. Smith (larceny), was sentenced to twelve months ; Geo. Miller pleaded " Guilty" to larceny; sentence was deferred. The Grand Jury found true bills against Downes on a charge of tampering with the stamping of deeds. WANGANUI, April 11. SportingThe Wanganui Steeplechase meeting is fixed for May 24th. The programme consists of Handioap Steeplechase, 225 sots, 3 miles—second horse, 25 sovs ont of stakes ; Maiden Steeplechase, 100 sovs ; Grand Stand Steeplechase, 75 sovs ; Consolation, 40 sovs. Nominations for Handicap olose on May 2nd. DUNEDIN, April 11. Supposed Suicide. Last evening it was reported to the police that a quantity of female apparel had been found at the Waverley Hotel, under circumstances pointing to suicide. They have been identified as belonging to Emily Donaldson, aged 41, who left her home on Saturday, and who was known to have gone to the Waverley that morning and has not since been heard of. The police are dragging the harbour. JudicialJudge Gillies, in his charge, congratulated the jury on the lightness of the calendar both as regarded the number and character of the offences to be tried. Sentences. The following sentences have been passed on prisoners pleading "Guilty":—James Mack, larceny, two years ; Harry Potter, larceny, two years; Wm. Everest, borough clerk, Hampden, embezzlement, two years. The case of Paget, Post Office clerk, will occupy the whole day. .Before commencing proceedings to-day, Mr Simpson, addressing the bar, intimated his intention to commit for contempt any practitioner guilty of interrupting or delaying the Court, as had been the practice lately.
