Sales of. general merchandise have been on a most limited scale, and there is a disposition on the part of traders to confine orders to the lowest possible point. The Weatfa, with a cargo of Bugar from the Mauritius, haß put in an appearance, and sales of . most clasßeß are being pushed by the importers. Further arrivals may be looked for very shortly. Loaf sugar has been sold in small lots ex recent arrivals, and fnll rateß have been obtained owing to the bareness of stocks. A few purchases of fine teas have been made up to la lOd to 2s Id in bond, and low at lOd to Is Id. Stocks of Glomes are low, but the demand is equally quiet; 7id to 7Jd is asked. Oilmen's stores have only seen trade inquiry. Considerable sales of candles of the Wellington and Dunedin manufacturers have transpired at list prices, and it may be noted that' the consumption of ■ those • goods is daily becoming more extensive. There is no doubt the local production in apparently affecting the sale of the imported article. The week has elicited an enquiry for bluestono, and as the Bowing season is now beginning some business may be anticiarrive are being quitted at 30s to J -a. Stocks of ploughshares era beginning to work down, but prices have in no way improved. Transactions in powdor have this season been very much behind tho average. Quittances are difficult to make, local Btocks boing ample, and the market is further deadened by offers from several interprovincial sources. Castor oil has been sold at ■4s. Nearly all the boiled and raw recently to hand has passed into second hands at late rates. A slight trade has taken place in wire, chiefly No. 8, but the business calls for no special notice. Corneacks are without change. There ia no alteration in brandy or whiskeys, and business has been limited outside of trade lots. Sherries are qniet, but a bettor demand for low to medium ports con be noted. Engagements ■ on tho 4th of the month were met with prompti- - tudo.
