Mr Fox told the Natives he would bo prepared to make boundaries and issue Crown grants whenever the desire of several Natives was expressed for a survey. Wiremu Kingi asked that nothing be done until the young men in prison be released. The Natives were anxious to know what was going to be done with the Faribaka block. Mr Fox said the Commission could do nothing, as Ta Whiti refused to allow his people to come near the Commission when at Oeo last year. The Natives are said to have met the Commission in a very friendly manner. WELLINGTON, April 6. The City of New York. A cablegram received by the Government this morning reports that the delay to the mail steamer City of New York was caused by the breaking of the crank pin four days after the steamer left Auckland. FireThe Clyde Hotel, Clyde quay, was discovered on Are at 2.30 this morning, and the building completely gutted before the flames were got under, vjrs Burke, the landlady, states she was awakened by her bedroom being full of smoke, and on getting np found tbo fire bad good hold. In the kitchen a small fire bad been left in the kitchen range, and it is believed that was the origin of the fire. The stock and furniture were destroyed. The building was owned by Mr Kennedy. A child named Edward Bertram Borge' aged eleven months, was scalded to death at Munguroa Valley yesterday. The mother was undressing the child before the fire when ho suddenly sprang out of her arms, and in falling caught the kettle, which capsized, throwing the scalding water all over the body of the child. The little sufferer lived only twelve hours. Bishop Redwood. Bishop Redwood returned from his visit to Rome at noon, and was accorded a hearly welcome on landing. He then proceeded to the Cathedral, where a formal reception takes place. Disreputable Clubs. At the Magistrate’s Court to-day his Worship gave judgment in the sly grog selling cases against the proprietor of the so-called Thorndonand Te AroOlub. His Worship looked upon those “clubs” as a fraud in the name of working men’s clubs, and it was time that legitimate tradespeople were protected. The spurious “clubs” wo.e opened by the steward only for his own benefit. Mrs Strike, of the Thorndon Club, was fined Is ; and Mr Strike, of the same club, £2O and costs. C. Lewis, proprietor of the Te Aro Club, was fined £2O and costs ; in default, six weeks’ imprisonment. Tampering with Stamps' Mr Michael Downes, solicitor’s clerk, re cently committed for trial, charged witn at alleged tampering with law stamps, was this morning committed for trial on tw-i charges of a similar nature. a letter was read from Mr Dance tb the scratching of Natator. He says he did so in , order not to risk the horse’s chance at Wanganui, and it was not worth while to etirt against Band wick, for whom he always considered the handicap a good thing.
