Several sailors by the ship Oxford were charged at the police court to-day with broaching cargo, and were remanded. German Encroachment. The German warships Habischt (Captain Kuhn) and tho More (Captain Von Kjkloush) are expected at Auckland shortly to relieve the Nautilus and Hyose now at Samoß. Auckland is thus practically made the principal naval station for German man-of-war ships in the Pacific NEW PLYMOUTH, April 4. Sporting. The drawers of tho winning horses in Cottier's £SOO sweep on the Jockey Club Handicap were Hugh Owen, Hawera Hotel; Frank Ferris, Stratford; and W. Stanley, New Plymouth. Bazaar. The Catholic bazaar took ovor £250 during the time it was open. The Weather. A heavy thunderstorm passed over the town last night, the lightning being very vivid. DUNEDIN, April 4. Damage by Rain. There was a heavy rainfall yesterday. The only damage which occurred in the city was the fall of a large stone e.'-nbankment in Dundas street, which fell on and completely destroyed the baok part of Mr Jas. Whitelaw'e residence, The Gaol Suspected. The " Star " learns that the Visiting Justices of Dunodin Gaol have sent tho Minister of Justice a strong protect against certain extraordinary doings in Dunedin Gaol. The matter is likely to bo brought before Parliament if not satisfactorily dealt with by the Department. WELLINGTON, April 4. KarineThe s.s. Hineinoa is to be practically laid up. She will ba used only on special occasions, when Captain Johiiulou, of the Marine Department, will take charge of her. Captain Fuireliild is transferred to tho Btella, and Captnin Grey to the now revenue cutter, Hawk. Theatrical. Mr Walter Reynolds opened the new season here to an excellent house in his own piece, ' Lost and Won." Rain. Heavy rain fell during a portion of yesterday and last night. It has done great good, but the quantity is yet insufficient. Woman's Rights. The Resident Magistrate to-day decided in the case Hill v Hill that a woman having a protection order could not be sued by her husband for property of his alleged to be in her possession.
