AKAROA COUNT Y COUNCIL.

An ordinary meeting of the above Council was held at the Council Chambers, Duvanchelle’a Bay, on Thursday, March 3let. Present—Messrs J. Dalglish (chairman), J. B. Barker, G. 8. Fleming, J. Gebbie, O. McDonald, and the Rev. R. R. Bradley. Tho following correspondence was read and considered From Mr W. Montgomery, M.H.R., re petition to bo presented to the House of Representatives next session to try and got County Councils placed on tho same footing as municipalities in regard to landed endowments. On the motion of Mr Gebbie, it was re.'olved to ask Mr W. Montgomery, M.H.R., to present and give the petition his beet support. From Mr J. Ollivier, agent for the settlement of compensation claims, asking tho Council to pay over to Messrs Harper and Co., Christchurch, the sum of £3OO, being amount due as road compensation to tho representatives of tho late Mr St. John, os the necessary conveyance had been completed, and conveyed to the Crown, Proposed by Mr Barker, seconded by Mr Bradley, and carried—" That the sum of £3OO, being amount of compensation due to the late Mr Bfc. John, be paid to Messrs Harper and Co., in accordance with Mr Ollivier’s certificate.” From the Manawatu County Council, enclosing several resolutions relating to tho sale of large blocks of land by Government, through which the local bodies have to form roads without getting any of the proceeds from the sale of the land, also in reference to tho Rating Act, and asking this Council’s cooperation to try and get the above amended, and, further, that a meeting of delegates from County Councils would be hold at Wellington on the first Wednesday of May next. On the motion of Mr McDonald it was resolved to acknowledge the receipt of the above letter. Further consideration of tho letter was deferred till next meeting of the Council, and in the meantime the clerk was directed to make inquiries as to what amount of support the resolutions were likely to receive from the other local bodies in reference to sending a delegate to the conference of delegates to be held at Wellington, From six residents at Onutu, asking the Council to erect a bridge ov’r ihe Onuku Creek. On the motion of Mr Gebbie, the clerk was instructed to write and advise the persons requesting a bridge oyer the Onuku Creek to apply to tho Akaroa and Wainui Road Board, as tho work required was in that district. From Air W. D Wilkins, 0.K., requesting the oontir>n«neo of the support which tho Council had hitherto accorded to the late firm of Fenton and Wilkins. Tho letter wus ordered to be acknowledged. From tho Akaroa Borough Council, stating that that Council h"d appointed a sub-committee to confer with the Akaroa County Council on the subject nt tho Hospital and Charitable Aid amounts paid to Government in connection with the borough and county generally, and to watch the procress of any Bill that may be submitted to Parliament on tho subject. On tho motion of Mr Gebbie, it was resolved—“ That a sub-oommittee, to consist of Messrs J. Dal-

glish, O, McDonald, and F. W. Williams, bo appointed to confer with the scb-committoe appointed by the A taro a Borough Council on the Hcspitahand Charitable Aid question.’* Prom the Akarou and Wainui Bead Board re site DuvaUcholle'e Bay, asking the Council to petition the Governor to change the purpose of a road reserve to a pound reserve. Proposed by Mr Gebbie, and carried :■—.« That the consideration of the letter from tho Ataroa and Wainui Road Board bo deferred till next meeting, and that the Akaroa and Wainui Road Board bo asked to furnish a plan and description of the land r °fi a ired for a pound before tho next meeting of this Council.” On the motion of Mr Gobble, it was resolved —“That the clerk to tho Council be allowed £2O per annum as travelling expenses." It was unanimously agreed not to appoint a dog ranger for the county at present, After passing sundry accounts to the amount of £9l 9s, the Council adjourned to April 23rd.
