THE ENGLISH MARKETS.

Messrs Miles Bros, and Co. report, under date London, February Ist: WOOL. The first series of sales for the present year has been fixed to commence on the 15th instant, and as the quantity was limited to 300,000 hales, and the arrivals now amount to 310,350 bales, the list will be closed at four o'clock to-day. The woollen trade has lately been rather depressed, and in France business shows no improvement, consequently it is expected that prices for some wools will show a decline when the sales open; but wo hear thit Btocks are everywhere low, and good wools are likely to maintain their value. The nublio sales at Antwerp closed on the 27th ultimo, and of the 678 baleß of Australian wool offered there, 387 bales were sold at abont id per lb below last London rates. The new arrivals to date are : Bales. New South Wales and Queensland 68,930 Tictoria 142.758 South Australia 46.542 Western Australia 246 Tasmania 127 New Zealand 11,117 Cape 40,630 Total 310,350 And about 15,000 bales old stock. WHEAT AND FLOUB. The wheat market has been very _ inactive during the past fortnight, and supplies from abroad have been large, with considerable deliveries from our English farmers. The supply of New Zealand is now limited, but the demand is very weak at a decline of la per quarter. In Australian, a cargo off coast was sold on the 7th inst. for Dunkirk, at 47s fid, and as a Continental demand has sprung up lately, coast cargoes are bringing rather better prices. In cargoes for distant arrival very little is doing. The surplus in America is still very heavy, and millers here continue to operate very cautiously. "We quote to-day, ex granary, Australian wheat, 49s 6d to 50s 6d per 4961b8 ; New Zealand (long berried), 47s to 50s; ordinary, 44s to 47s ; and inferior, 40a to 435. Australian flour, superfine, 33s to 35s per 2801bs , households, 30s to 32s ; and New Zealand flour, 30s to 325. New Zealand barley, fine malting, 32s to 42s per 4-181bs; inferior, 25s to 28s. New Zealand oatmeal, -C!> 10s to XLO 10s per ton. TALLOW AND HIDES. The tallow market has been Bomewhat quieter, and at Bales to-day, only 860 casks of Aastralian were sold out of 1200 casks offered, at a decline of li.l to 6d per cwt on both mutton and beef, the former realising 35s to 37s for middling to good, and the latter, 33s 9d to 3ls for fair quality. The stocka in importers' har.di now amounts to about 7800 casks. Australian hides were in limited request yesterday, and heavies declinod CJd, and occis onally light and cows the Buiio- The stock is now large, viz., about 50,000 hides. PRESERVED MEATS. There is still a very fair demand for tinned meats, beef being in largest demand. In fresh meats we have to give a very satisfactory account of the shipment ex Protos, a.s., from Australia. It arrived in excellent condition, and the flavor was quite equal to English meat. Bank rate, 3i per cent.

Went to see eaoh other.—Whenever actors or actresses get a holiday they go to see some other aotor at some other theatro. " You remind me," Fawoett, the stage manager of Covent Garden, used to say, "of two prisoners, one in the Fleet, the other in the King's Bench, who always went to see each other whenever they got a day'e liberty."
