Instructions have been given to proceed with a section of throe miles of tho Thames to Waikato Railway. This contract will take the line to deep water in the Thames Biver ingidc the bar. Mining. Claims at Te Aroha continue working, and all the machinery for the battery is on the ground. NAPIER, March 29. The Property Tax. The total property tax paid in the Hawkes Bay district is .£12,724 11a lid, or .£328 lest than the estimate. Satisfactory. At the annual meeting of the Working Men's Club the btlauce sheet showed receipts .£450, and expenditure £438. Operatic Simonson's company are drawing crowded houses. ■WELLINGTON, March 29. Port Chalmers is agitating for a Resident Magistrate. The Bible in SchoolsThe Bible Schools' Association have received eixty-three replies from the schools to their circular. 303 persons, representing 817 children, are opposed to Bible reading; 1679 parents, representing 6916 children attending schools, are in favor of its introduction. Sadden Death. 1 Mr Thomas Cook, a settler at Tauho, has ' been found dead on the roadside. Home Again. The Waitangi meeting has dosed, and the Natives have dispersed. Curiosities of Sporting. At Panmure races there was a scandalous scone in connection with the Handicap, of 26 sovs. Before tbe race ever came off, rumours that " dark riding " would be attempted in the case of Golden Crown were freely circulated, and considerable interest was, therefore, taken in it. A fairly good start was effected, and Magician quickly took the lead, , followed by Flora, Golden Crown being last. , At the back of the course Golden Crown, : being let out, assumed first plaoe, but i immediately afterwards he collided with i a post, whioh was knooked down . by bis shoulder. Magician and Flora went , ahead, and it appeared to spectators that Golden Crown was being pulled. At tho [ oorner on the last round Magician would not . turn, and ran some distance off the course, i followed by Flora. Golden Crown continued alone, but after proceeding nearly 100 yards, be was pulled up into a walk until Magician i had passed. Hu then started off again, and . the crowd expressed their disapprobation by I hooting and hissing. Magician led during the , remainder of the distance, and won with about two lengths to spare. The conclusion i of the race was the signal for the commencei ment of a most exciting but disgraceful scene. The matter was brought before the stewards, when it was decided that Magician should take first money, Flora second, and Golden Crown be disqualified out of the raoe on account of dark riding. It was the opinion of the stewards also that all bets on the event i Bhould be declared off. WELLINGTON, March 28. The West Coast Railway. At a meeting of the provisional directors of the Wellington-Manawatu Railway this afternoon, it was resolved to allow the question of the terminus to remain open until the permanent directors were elected. It was stated thiit tho prospects were good, £30,000 having been subscribed. Messrs Shannon and N«.than were added to the Executive Council. OABTERTON, Maroh 28. Sporting. A meeting of the Jockey Club was held on Saturday, when nineteen nominations were received for the Champagne Stakes, 1882, and twenty.two for the District Produce Stakes, 1884. The question as to the advisability of holding a Spring meeting was referred to the stewards. GBE?MOUTH, March 28. Gold Mining. The return of amalgam from the top plates of the Golden Fleece's Extended Quartz Mining Company for last week was 263 ounces from 132 tons of quartz. An Effective Blast. A large blast was fired in connection with the harbor works. The charge consisted of a thousand pounds of colonial dynamite, and 25CT.be of colonial lithofractour. This is the first large charge of such explosives fired ia the colony. Although the rock was full of Beams and cavities, it is estimated that about 9000 tons wore thrown out and loosened. HOKiriKA, March 28. Legal. Mr Justice Gillies oponed the Supreme Court at ten this morning. Jane Browne, for stealing from the person, was acquitted. The case of Daniel Whclan, stealing from a dwelling, was partly heard, and adjourned tiil to-morrow. Valuable InformationThe Hon. Mr Gisbor:;o leaves for Christchurch, en, route for Wellington, to-morrow morning. OAMARU, March 28. Supposed Incendiarism. Two stacks of oats and a slack of wheat, belonging to Mr John Lawrence, wore destroyed by fire on Saturday night. It is evident that the fire was the deliberate act of an incendiary, for the straw had been pulled out and laid down between tho stacks, which were about twelve feet apart. The stacks, which were about half a mile from the main road, wore insured in the Victorian Company for £7O, about one-third of their value. Death from Accident. Mr John Peattie, who was injured by a threshing machine a few days ago. is dead. DUNEDIN, Maroh 28. Another SectIt was stated at a meeting of Freethinkers yesterday that they will declare themselves as such in the census to bo taken next Sunday. INVERCABGILL, March 28. Browned. During tho cruise of the Alert, whioh returned to tho Bluff yestorday, a man named David McKouzio was washed overboard and drowned.
