CANTERBURY RAM AND EWE FAIR.
The Canterbury Bam and Ewe Fair began this morning in the grounds of the Agricultural and Pastoral Association, which presented a busy appearance from an early hour, the representatives of the various auctioneers being fully employed in penning the various lots to bo submitted to competition. Upwards of 1403 rams were yarded, and taking into consideration the length of time that has elapsed since rain has fallen, and the barren state of the sheep runs and paddocks all over this provincial district, the rams were in much better condition than could be reasonably expected. At twenty minutes past eleven o'clock, Mr D. Thomas, of Messrs H. Matson and Co., commenced the auction by submitting to competition seven pens of Lincoln rams belonging to Messrs Mor'en, White and Co. y but, despite his eloquence, no bid was elicited, and the lot, 35 in number, were passed in. Mr Campbell, of Messrs Acland, Campbell, and Co, next offered 10 magnificent Bomney Marsh rams, on account of Mr W. D. Lawrence, in lots of two. The first lot fell to the bid of Mr Bristow, at the low price of JEI leeaoh ram, consequently the balance of the lot were passed in. Messrs F. O. Tabart, of Messrs B. Wilkin and Co., next wielded the baton, and called for bids singly for 27 Lincoln rams on account of Mr F. Sutton, of Southland, the first of which fell to the nod of Mr Buchanan for £lO 10s ; another was secured by the Hon. H. B. Grossoa for 101 guineas ; Mr G. F. Lovegrove securing 2 at 5 guineas each, 4 at 41 guineas each, and 5 at 4 guinea! each, tie rest being passed in. Ten Bomney Marsh rams, on accjunt of Hon, M. Holmes, were passed in at £3 3s eaoh. Fourty-four Lincoln rams were next submitted, of which 5 fell to Mr Greenaway’s nod at 5 guineas each, 16 to Mr D. G. Holmes at the same figure, 21 to Mr A. Cox at 4 guineas each, and 3 to Mr Alex. Broadfoot at 31 guineas. Messrs H. Matson and Co followed with 100 2-tooth Lincolns on account of Mr John Grigg, Mr Elworthy securing 15 at 41 guineas each, 5 at 4, guineas, and 5 at 5J guineas eaoh. To the nod of Mr A. Cox 25 fell at 41 guineas eaoh, and 10 at 4 guineas each, whilst Mr Wearing bought 20 at 11 guineas each. The attendance was limited and the bidding very languid, not more than 150 persons being present, and considering the pedigree of the sheep[offered, thoresultßare very unsatisfactory so far. The ■ tie is still proceeding as we go lo press. The proprietor of the Commercial Hotel had a refreshment booth on the ground.
